Progressive or Interlaced ntsc in CCE

I have followed Robshot's method to transcode the dvd movie
to fit into dvdr.

I am working on ntsc movies and noted that if I use progressive
movie, using dvd2avi force film, re-encode in cce and lastly
pulldown, result is perfect.

But with interlaced movies, everything is fine until I use
pulldown. Pulldown changes the framerate and it makes the
video jerky, showing horizontal strips on edges of moving
things in video.

I tried dvd2avi Field operation to none, so the framerate
remained 29.97, and encoded, result was ok. Movie played on
computer perfectly, but when I burnt it on DVDr and played
on tv, it was jerky again.

What I am doing wrong?

Sounds like you may have encoded the interlaced footage with the wrong field order. Oddly enough, you may be able to use pulldown to fix the field order.

Try the following syntax:

pulldown movie_name.mpv new_movie_name.mpv -nopulldown -tff odd

and re-burn to CDR. Unfortunately I can't tell you if even or odd is correct. If -tff odd results in jerky playback (the same as what you've already got), try it again with -tff even.

Don't use pulldown on 29.97fps source. It is only meant to be used on a 23.976fps source to make it ready for authoring. Your 29.97fps source is already suited for authoring. Skip that step when you set DVD2AVI to "none."

When used with the -nopulldown setting, pulldown will not change the framerate. You can safely use it to change the field order.

I had the exact same problem when doing PAL to NTSC conversions. The artifact you are seeing is called 'combing' and is due to the fact that your source is interlaced.

I am a big fan of the quality of the CCE encoded files so I wanted to keep that as my encoder but TMPGEnc has so many nice options to help you out....

1. Rip as usual
2. DVD2AVI with Video set to NONE
3. Drop that into TMPGEnc and set the video parameters appropriately to get the aspect ratio you want. Make sure you make the output 720x480 and the framerate to 23.97. Use the DEINTERLACE (Double) filter as well as set DO NOT FRAME RATE CONVERT option.
4. Now save the TMPGEnc project as a .tpr file
5. Use VFAPI to convert that tpr file into a pseudoAVI
6. Drop the pseudoAVI into CCE and set it for SAR1:1 aspect ratio. Do NOT use 'Progressive' setting in CCE this time.
7. Encode away as what ever settings you want, then use Pulldown as usual

I get perfect results with no artefacts, as TMPGEnc applies all the filters and sizes and CCE encodes the stream. Hope this helps.

Please clarify that your procedure is for converting Pal video
to NTSC or is it simply NTSC Interlaced video with originally
29.97 fps.

My case is:-

source --> Interlaced Video NTSC 29.97 (Field Order in D2V to "NONE"

target --> Interlaced Video NTSC 29.97

For this can I follow your process?

You can try Darmin's Field Changer, if you drop me an email I can send it to you. It's like 34kb or something. I use it whenever I encode interlaced material with CCE and gets rid of the jerky movement during movement.
