wich filter for noise removal and wich Q# in MJPEG do u prefer

hi i am a new at capturing video so i have few questions.....
I am capturing tv shows(movies,cartoons....etc) and it is PAL and INTERLACED

For deinterlaceining iam using "smart deinterlace by Donald Graft 2.7 beta 2"
and it performs pretty well.If there is some better filter for this purpose i am open for suggestions.....


1)but the picture iam reciving via cable antena is full of heavy noise and this is my main problem.......how to filter out this noise????:confused: you can see snap shoot in attachment

2)and one more thing: wich Q# in MJPEG do you prefer 17,18,19 or 20

Deinterlacing... It depends (you probably love such responses).

1.) Nov@ TV has a crappy picture by itself (only OTV is badder :eek: )

3.) Read the favorite settings etc. Smart smoother is a very good noise reduction filter for the starters...
4.) Make sure you have set the antenna the proper way :)

It seems you're using Picvideo...

17 is the minimum for me. If you're gonna use 20, you can switch to Huffyuv as it's lossless and it doesn't take much more space than MJPEG at 20.

i tested few filters in vdub but none of them can remove this kind of noise,example:if set near to max it removes lot of details along with the noise.....and that is the only way the remove the f**king noise
So i tested with something else:

This time i used DivX5.0 codec with Pre Processing Source(extreme)
and this combination of filter(smart deinterlace) and divx5 preProce
gave me the best results

Well, you can only try for yourself, as you do it for yourself :) .

IMO, your example is too blurred, but as said, everyone has it's own taste. BTW, there are so many filters out there that it's almost impossible to try every one of them the proper way...

P.s.: I'm glad too that there are more people from Croatia here ;) .

A very good filter for noisy material is TemporalSoften() in avisynth.
But you're right: the pre-processing settings in DivX5 are really good. I also use the "extreme" setting in combination with temporalsoften for captures of Futurama and Simpsons (on these cartoons you can use more extreme filtering without the picture getting too blurry)

about mjpg, also 17 can give good quality,
you notice its a lossy codec when you save the video more times,
also at 20 you note artifacts when saving 4/5 times,
then 2/3 times for 17.
jpg artifacts get removed from good soften filters.
if you are low on space for capture, you can capture at 17/18,
and then if you need to save an intermediate file,switch to a lossless codec editing your video in smaller parts.
mjpg only once doesnt hurts so much........
(btw,you can fine tune compression in picv mjpg,es.set quality to 97/98(20 is 100, 19 is 95)quality will be better than 19,and size the half of "lossless" codecs).

The best smoother filter is the Spatial Soften of avisynth,
you can combine with temporal Soften without blurring.
if you need a stonger noise removal without artifact use also the precise bilinear resize,
two times,the 1st enlarging at twice the final size
the 2nd applying a 2:1 resize.
you will get more details,but less noise removal,using p bicubic when enlarging(p bicubic of avisynth,not virtdub).

capturing in MJPEG===>DIVX5(smartDeinterlaceing)
it just one saving

is q17 comparable to DivX4.12 first pass 2000kbps???



PS: did anybody had pink artifacts with DivX5?????
coz when i encode exported(picMJPEG) flash animation from SWiSH v2.0 then it appears

when you get pink artefacts, you're probably not using a Hx32, Wx16 resolution. Wx16 is a must in divx5, unfortunately.

in your ex you are using mjpg one time,
source->1stloss(mjpg)
mjpg-->2ndloss(divx)
then you could use lev17(aka 85%)
some vid recompress more times well,some not,it depends.

comparable like same amount of loss?,could be,
an high-low-compression codec vs a low-high-compression one...
try to capture at 18 however.

PS: wait sometime to use divx5.

hhhmmmmm...damn i made the dummest mistake .........yes you are right i set the resolution in swish 600(37.5)x400(25)...corected it to 608x416.......sneaky mistake :angry:


i gues q18 would be good relation between quality and filesize
so I`ll probably use it........
