DVD-R media recs for Panasonic standalone

I've had mixed results with DVD-Rs played on my Panasonic A310 standalone unit. It seems like the pricey Panasonic DVS-R470SD media works fine. The GQ media works, but there are a fair number of video glitches, like pixellation. The DVDPro (Princo?) media doesn't work at all in my deck.

Has anyone tried other generic media in this or a similar Panasonic player and had it work perfectly?

I've had similar problems with different media/players. It seems the more expensive the media, the more compatible it is. (go figure) I've found Pioneer media to be the only DVD-R that my JVC SA70BK will even recognize. (plays it fine BTW) I've read Apple DVD-Rs are also very compatible, but they are still $5 a piece. I've also found that it's very important to burn a cd image with IFOedit, then burn with Prassi (NOT NERO) It would be nice if Doom9 could get some kind of media/player format chart going. Similar to the one on vcdhelp.com but more accurate and also listing different BRANDS of media. This trial & error thing is beginning to suck! Starting a compatibility chart or just getting people to add brand-related info to the existing one would be great.

I tried the discs that gave me trouble in my el-cheapo Raite player and they all worked fine. It's probably because those bargain DVD players are more like computerless DVD-ROM drives than quality standalone systems.

$5 a disc for Apple media is a bargain compared to $8 Pioneer blanks. Question is, has anyone used them with PC burners like the Pioneer DVR-A03? I'm guessing they'd work, but...

I've got an AO3 also. I've got some Apple discs on order. Should be here by Friday. I can post my findings then. BTW, I exchanged my purple Meritlines for gold topped ones.They should be here Thursday. They are supposed to be better quality. I'll post here when I get them tested. The Apple burner is made by Pioneer. It's the same drive with the Apple name on it. So yeah....they'll work.

According to Apple's media compatibility list, their blanks should work in both your JVC SA70BK and my Panasonic A310. The drive used in the Apple systems is the DVR-103, but it could be identical to the DVR-A03; you never know with that OEM stuff.

Did you find a better price than $25/5 pack for the Apple media?

So Meritline traded the purple discs for gold ones, huh? Did you have an opened 10-pack, or were they singles?

I ordered directly from the Apple store, so I'm assuming this is the lowest price. My purple Meritline discs were in a 25 pack spindle. They said they would credit me per individual disc.
Strange thing I discovered last night: my blanks from www.blank-cd-cdr.com work fine in my Samsung, Pioneer, & Toshiba but not in my JVC:angry: (dropouts throughout) So, out of the 4, the JVC seems to be the most picky. I'll let you know on the other media when it arrives.

I think it's hard to find Apple stuff at much of a discount. They were the same price at Fry's.

What brand of blanks did you get from blank-cd-cdr?

By dropouts, do you mean pixelation?

I got hold of some Apple media, but no luck--the Panasonic player recognized it as a DVD but then it just STOPs. :eek: I've got some Que! (Mitsui) media as well--I'm going to give that a try tomorrow.

Maybe I should build myself an HTPC. Then I could use the cheap media :D

Yeah pixelization & audio dropouts. It seems this only occurs in the last couple of chapters in the movie. If you stay under 3 GB (splitting movies) they are fine. My gold topped Meritlines perform well on my JVC. I haven't got the apple media yet. They should be here on Monday.BTW, the blanks I got from blank CDR were just generic general use. Now this is f**ked up: The blank cdr brand discs work well in the toshiba, but not in the JVC. The gold Meritlines work good in the JVC, but not in the Toshiba. This is becoming very tiring :confused: Now it looks like I can keep my JVC though:sly:

That's great about the gold Meritlines--I'm going to give them a try.

I've had some success too. The QPS Que! Gold-on-Gold DVD-R media (it's marked Mitsui on the discs) I got from Fry's seems to work very well; I've only spot-checked the discs, but haven't seen any dropouts at all. The only problem is, it's not that cheap--I paid $6 a disc on sale. :( Still beats Pioneer media prices, though.

If you or anyone else reading these posts has run across a better deal on the QPS or Mitsui media, please post the URL.

One other question--have you run into any situations where the burn speed made a difference (burning at 1x instead of 2x)?
