Flashback: DVD-Rip + XingDVD... Remember ?

You remember ? This is the first method I used, Doom9's website wasn't open...

We used DVD-Rip who capture the frame during the playback of the DVD (with Xing DVD), just to get a VOB file with a lot of crc error, etc...

Then DeCSS appeared, and it was so great to have the vob file in less than 1 hour !!
I discovered go.to/doom9 in march 1999, it is the first month of his existence, Doom9 ?

mpeg2avi was my first encoder, and I am still using it :D

Making a NTSC backup that was sync was an art.

I "discovered" Doom9's site when Oleg made a posting. Back then it was a MS MPEG4 only site and I thought the webmaster will update it for a month or two :D .

When did you start in this DVD backup adventure? What was your nick on Olegs disc. board? Don't tell me Tester JM?! ;)

BTW, I have to change my "Moderator" into something more appropriate. Any suggestions?

the first site to link to my mine was freezy3k's. Oleg picked that up and that started it. I, too was a member at oleg's board, known as doom9. Some of you might still remember my posts on ripping matrix, and me getting increasingly annoyed when people, a few months after the release of vobdec, still ripped using decss and then complained about scrambled video.

He,he I also started DVD Ripping with PowerRipper and PowerDVD,.. damn took me once a whole weekend to get one damn movie synch ;)

He,he mpeg2avi and a bit later flask were THE BOMB !!

Ps.: Since it looks like cracking protections even for private use will get illegal in germany (damn EU,..). I might check out those methods once again in a not to far future,...

(My first Rip was Spawn the animated series, also my first DVD, bought it once it was available,... something like 1997 if i remember right)

btw, blacksun, it was march 2000, not 1999. In march 1999 I was still in my junior year, had no computer during the week and only a handful of DVDs. While I've been reading Oleg's page all along I had unsucessfully tried out dvd2mpg and given up on DVD ripping until I leared about dodsrip @ inmatrix.com

I used powerripper, but never could get sound. Luckily dvd2mpeg came out. That baby was sweeeeeeeeet :)

If i looked really hard, I think I still have a Xing player on CD in a box somewhere...

I remember using powerripper to rip my first dvd.
And then I tried to get the audio with TotalRecorder which always resulted in the video being completely out of sync...
I loved mpeg2avi and decss when it came out.
That was before even Flask could do AVI output. ;)

Oh yeah, it was in 2000, so it is making me younger :D I never used DVD2MPEG. I still use m2a because I have only PAL movies, so since it is not interlaced, I use it, in the other case, DrDivX...

And Doom9 was the first to purpose the AVI-AC3 solution, that's why PowerDivX was born :D
