Any DVD ripping problem with a Laptop?

Are there any known issues with ripping a DVD and encoding to DivX x.xx on any laptops? I remember hearing something about IBM ThinkPad's. Since I'm even to sure about what laptop I'm getting yet I'd like to forget about some model possibilities if they will disadvantage me in some way.

Also my laptop will not be my primary ripping machine. I'd just like the laptop to be able to rip/encode if it is called upon.

Are there any recommendations?

I'm running on a Sony VAIO GR300, custom configured, with Windows XP Professional. Ripping is no problem. I got the DVD/CDRW drive, so I can burn VCDs as well. (My standalone Sony DVP-C650D doesn't play SVCDs unfortunately...) I'm a big fan of the VAIOs because Sony's firewire support is top notch. While other DV packages are prone to dropped frames and glitches, Sony's DVGate Motion is smart enough to resync with camcorders, it never loses a frame on input or output.
I suppose firewire and DV aren't too relevant to DVD ripping, but the fact is this machine does video processing really well, and if you're interested in burning other things to VCD besides DVD rips, the DV/firewire route is really nice to have.

A digital-8 camcorder is a good live video source; I just use the Dazzle Hollywood DV Bridge. It's been a fun toy...

While other DV packages are prone to dropped frames and glitches, Sony's DVGate Motion is smart enough to resync with camcordersI don't know what other DV packages are prone to dropped frames and glitches - I've been using a cheap no-name Firewire adapter in two different systems (a PII 350 running Win98SE and an Athlon 1000 running Win2K) and it never dropped a single frame.
The old PII 350 was on a really bad mobo with even worse RAM-sticks, recording DV to and from camcorder (Sony PC100) with Ulead Video Capture and Video Editor was about the only stable application :)
So, I really don't think recording a DV stream thorugh firewire is dependant on exclusive, expensive hardware. However, I don't know about notebooks and firewire, maybe that's a different story?

I may be misremembering the symptom, but we definitely had sync errors using other programs on a PII-400 VAIO laptop. Never any errors using the DVGAte stuff tho.
