I'm a newbie, trying to compress Pleasantville via GK and the Divx5 guide, please bear with me. I'll try too give too much info rather than too little! System is Athlon 1GHz w/256MB and loads of disk space (~80 GB free on scratch drive) on WinXP.

As I roll through the guide, I get to the Nandub stage, having done 2 passes through VirtualDub, yielding files creatively named "first_pass.avi" and "second_pass.avi". first_pass is about 4.3 MB, and second_pass is about 1.2 GB; I'm not sure if this is reasonable or not. first_pass took about 3.5 hours to run, second_pass took about 3 hours.

When I try to open first_pass in Nandub I get this text in the error box: "Invalid AVI file: chunk at 1439516 extends outside of parent by 44057779 bytes". I can open second_pass and the .mp3 file, but when I start the job it just sits and grinds, setting up the job, if you will. After it sat for 45 min predicting a task time of 12+ hours I aborted.

Parenthetically, I just started the preview mode in Nandub, and my file is a mess, artifacts and ghosting all over the place. I may have really munged this up...:scared: doh... This was my second attempt - the .vob files look good, but I must have screwed up somewhere.

Original question about the first/second pass files still stands!

Thanks,

Scott

redid everything again, both first and second pass files about 4 meg after 8 hours, what am I doing wrong?!? I no longer suspect nandub, it's something I am messing up in virtualdub.

Your using divx5 I think - there are a few things you must know:

1. Don't use the hacked codec, it screws up your movies
2. Don't use psychovisual settings
(3. Don't use quarter-pel)
(4. Don't use GMC)
5. Only use video heights divisible by 16 or even better by 32 and video widths divisible by 16.

I'm not 100% sure about 3.) and 4.) - I don't use both options because they might cause problems and I think they're not worth taking the risk.

All other things you describe sound good. The first pass avi file is only a dummy, you can't open it. The times for first and second pass sound good too, as well as the final filesize of your second pass avi.

Hmm, third attempt with somewhat different settings (1 CD instead of 2) second_pass still unreadable, resolution was 512x288, both divisible by 32. What comes out of virtualdub just isn't working for me, at least for this movie. I'll have to try something else.

1. Full version of DivX5Pro, not hacked
2. Not in use
3. Not in use
4. I was using GMC, as suggested in the Guide, I'll try without
5. Done

Thanks for your suggestions!
