A friend of my said he could rip a DVD movie from his cd-drive, he doesn't own a dvd-drive.
Can this be done with any software?

The quick answer is no. DVD discs need the correct hardware to read them and no software out there can get around this fact. Maybe he has the ripped film on regular cdrom?!?!?
