Hi everyone!

I hope there are people who like it (those who don't, please ignore): I always wanted a phase display in WinAmp, just like in Cubic Player; I couldn't find a ready-made plugin, so I asked Nullsoft a few months ago for adding a way to access each sample in the current frame - this made it possible to create a phase display in AVS.

And here it is! Unzip this attached collection e.g. into {WinAmp}\Plugins\avs\LigH. Use it to watch your transcoded audio (sometimes it looks very funny, especially heavily LFE-using scenes). The colorisation may help you to decide if your audio is either over-compressed or too weak.

Feel free to optimise or enhance them further, and to tell me about your experiences.

Just as I wrote: It may help to decide if the amplification is chosen well; it may help to understand how audio effects work; and finally, it may be just fun!

For example:

* Did you know that "Wamdue Project: King of my Castle" is pure mono, at least on the collection "House of Spring"?

* If you wanna have fun, watch titles made by "SEEED" - the bass e.g. in "Dancehall Caballeros" will rip your stomach; and it looks just stunning.

* It will be interesting to actually see the difference between Dolby Surround ProLogic and DSPL 2 (if Midas will implement it finally).

After all: If you don't like it, don't use it. (Or are you upset about me giving you something for free? :D )

I am not using Winamp anymore because the crappy thing will always crab certain file types without being asked  ... so i deinstalled it. I am trying to make my mind up if its worth looking at it again if the phase info is useful ....

Well, yes - that's a problem I never solved: Which file type do I need to enter in WinAmp for unknown types to avoid catching *all* filetypes? (Maybe WinAmp3 is not so selfish? At least, it has AVS too.) Another known problem on my PC is that Nullsoft output plugins does not play well 48 kHz audio (I have a TT DMX Xfire 1024), output plugins by other authors instead play very well.

But although you don't use WinAmp anymore, others still do. And I don't know other players which allow to create custom visualisations in such an easy way.

Now that a few people downloaded it, are there any opinions? (I'm just curious...)

Dear DarkAvenger,

you asked what a phase display is good for... unfortunately, I must tell you now: To find a bug in BeSweet.

Since version 1.1 (thanks to my archive) I could track down this bug - I suddenly wondered why all the encodings looked so much oriented towards the back channels. Then I ran a test with the official AC-3 test pattern. Here are a few pictures of the results:

BeSweet 1.0: "Left front (http://www.ligh.de/pics/BeSweet/BS10_lf.gif)" | "Center (http://www.ligh.de/pics/BeSweet/BS10_cf.gif)" | "Right front (http://www.ligh.de/pics/BeSweet/BS10_rf.gif)" | "Right surround (http://www.ligh.de/pics/BeSweet/BS10_rs.gif)" | "Left surround (http://www.ligh.de/pics/BeSweet/BS10_ls.gif)" | "LFE (http://www.ligh.de/pics/BeSweet/BS10_lfe.gif)"
BeSweet 1.1: "Left front (http://www.ligh.de/pics/BeSweet/BS11_lf.gif)" | "Center (http://www.ligh.de/pics/BeSweet/BS11_cf.gif)" | "Right front (http://www.ligh.de/pics/BeSweet/BS11_rf.gif)" | "Right surround (http://www.ligh.de/pics/BeSweet/BS11_rs.gif)" | "Left surround (http://www.ligh.de/pics/BeSweet/BS11_ls.gif)" | "LFE (http://www.ligh.de/pics/BeSweet/BS11_lfe.gif)"

(BTW: Those randomly appearing pixels towards the right channel might be wrong data delivered by WinAmp. I'll contact them about it.)
