View Full Version : Gknot warning about 2.41 smartripper

"Do not use d2v-project files with smartripper 2.41, you might get async sound!" Should I take this seriously? I think I did it already with one specific movie and I'm getting async sound (maybe it has nothing to do with the ripper, maybe it does). Using VirDub to preload and delay the sound seems like shooting in the dark, perhaps there is another way? Thanks for any help.

I can confirm that strange things can happen if you use the d2v file created by SR2.41.

Ugh... finally a response. Alright then, if I have problems doing a divx I do a svcd instead then. (i've never had bad svcds >:p)

Why switch to SVCD?
You get TWO d2v-files; one generated by SmartRipper and one by DVD2AVI. Use the DVD2AVI d2v as stated in Doom's guide.

What are you talking about getting a d2v-file from SmartRipper? I'm saying that if SmartRipper 2.41 causes async sound _from the source_ (the VOBs on the harddrive) then there is no real way to fix it. Fortunately this seems to happen with divx only.

SmartRipper 2.41 can create a d2v-file directly (without dvd2avi!) but this function does not work 100% perfect.
using SmartRipper 2.41 (movie mode) for ripping and dvd2avi for creating the d2v is fine, no problem here.
new vstrip_08f can create d2v-files as well. no problems have been reported yet afaik. you save one step and don't need dvd2avi any more...

Hmm... I don't use Movie Mode when ripping, instead I just do a backup. Using DVD2AVI for my d2v-files is quick enough and knowing that sr2.41's way isn't 100% perfect, I'd like to stick with the older method.
The main point is, I'm experiencing asynch sound. Is this because I used SR2.41? If so, is there anything I can do? If not, what could I be doing differently?

sorry, i don't have time now to go into detail (maybe someone else?), but in many cases you HAVE TO use movie mode, no matter what encoding method you want to go for...
(i recommend to ALWAYS use movie mode if you are not 100% sure what you are doing! - to understand this try to find out what ifo-parsing means...)

I have a question. After doing a full backup you could still do movie mode from the backup from the harddrive. This is just in case one of the movie mode sequences has a "repeat" in it, and you don't have the dvd any longer to obtain the correct stream. I ask this because would this yield the same result albeit longer work?

I can confirm using Smartripper in backup or file-mode makes, what is smart about it, dumb. If You backup for divx encoding don't! For simply watching it is the best though. Ever tried to encode X-Men/MAtrix with Backup Mode? Good Luck!
I often used the Smartripper's d2v file. I haven't heard any asynch yet. Maybe I'm lucky, but I will try vstrip now.
With Smartripper, when I extract the ac3 in movie mode I can only rip in 1x to 2x onto my slow Samsung 60 GB HD. That sucks, cause I get like up to 8x to 10x without any extra files ripped out of the vobs. It doesn't affect my IBM HDrive though! There I get up to 13x!
The Samsung matter made me stop using the SR d2v file.
