I. Barebones Version
Smartripper -> DVD2AVI/force film OFF -> AVIUTIL -> VFAPI
-> Virtualdub/Nandub -> Divx3/5
Here, we are using AVIUTIL

to perform the inverse telecining. To do so, unzip the archive. There is no installation necessary, simply execute the executable. File -> open -> choose the project file created by DVD2AVI (of course, making sure to turn OFF force film). If you drag the search bar left and right, you should see the frames that are being frameserved from DVD2AVI, you will also notice that all the frames are telecined (notice the scanlines). To instruct AVIUTIL to perform IVTC on this 29.970fps feed of frames, make sure these are "on" : (1) Setting -> Framerate Conversion -> 30->fps Invoke Automatic Inverse Telecine. (2)Setting -> Framerate Conversion -> 24fps <- 30fps (4/5). And, (3) Setting -> Automatic Inverse Telecine (the top option, apparently there are two, check the on the top). Now drag the search bar back and forth, the IVTC'ing is being performed by AVIUTIL on the fly, you should NOT see any scanlines or telecined frames. If this did not work, you should change the "field order": File -> General Settings
-> Open video with delayed odd field. That should SURELY take care of it. Due to the fact that AVIUTIL is a clumsy program and really only really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really good at IVTC, you should use it to frameserve to Virtualdub where it will be cropped, resized, muxed with audio, etc, etc. To do so: File -> save project -> name.aup. Now use VFAPI, to convert this aviutil project file into a .avi file that virtualdub can read. In vdub the frames should be purely progressive with no scanlines or repeat frames. At this point, you should work with it as you usually do. Drag the search bar back and forth, you should see that no single frame is telecined. At this point, you should mux the audio, crop and resize, basically, proceed as if you didn't do the AVIUTIL step. Proceed as if the DVD was perfectly mastered with 100% progressive frames.
II. Some thoughts
AvIUTIL is the MOST powerful IVTC'er, however, it is the slowest program out there. It will cut down your speed by 40 percent. I think, to do the movie right, is more important, it's a 40 percent well lost. Another method that many people have used is to use the telecide/decimate filter in virtualdub to do IVTC. However, from my experience AVIUTIL is the only one that has consistently gotten it right.
III. What titles have required IVTC?
Right now, I am ripping the Roots MINI-series. Roughly 80 percent of the movie is FILM, the rest are telecined frames. I am using DVD2AVI to stretch the entire movie into 29.970fps (effectively telecining the whole DVD), and finally using AviUTIL to reconstruct the original 24fps, thereby, resulting in 100 percent progressive frames.
The Godfather is another troublesome DVD. There are some 10 minutes of telecined frames, ie, Michael visiting italy after shooting Sollozzo and Captain McChicken, that section needs IVTC'ing.
