All avi's are locked by windows XP

Hi everyone,

Have you ever heard of this problem i'm having. All the avi's on my harddisk are locked and cannot be deleted or renamed by windows xp. even after rebooting my pc the avifiles are still locked. Does somebody know about this? And how do i solve this problem? Any help is very welcom.

A couple things to try.
First if you have an NTFS Partition see what the permissions are. Also see if you can take ownership.
next, try to load into safe mode. Start the command prompt, then go to the dir where you have the files. type in "del *.avi" or "del *.avi /s" Only use the /s if you would like to search for more files to delete.

Worst case. Put the HD into another computer. then delete the file there.......

Oke. first of all thanks for replying and second where can i see these permisions and where can i change the ownership. all i know is that my useraccount is one of the admins group. i always thought this was enough. And one other thing windows was working good until i installed the divx 5.0 pro codec. perhaps this has something todo with this.

if you right click the folder, then goto properties. you should get a security tab.
If you do then you will see a button that says "ownership".
see if you can take ownership of the folder & all sub-folders....

I'm sorry to say that your help didn't help me. Thats because i do net get a security tab. And in that case i cannot take ownership. But that anyway.
And since i'm also starting to have more troubles with other programs also. i dicided to reinstall windows again. this always solves the problem.

I cant' explain why this works since I just have been adviced to do this, but nevertheless it works. Do this:
1)Open regedit
2) Find this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32

There you'll find: REG_EXPAND_SZ %SystemRoot%\System32\shmedia.dll

Delete this file. This solved a lot of problems for me, since xp slows the pc down, mostly with large file downloded half-the-way. This is because XP tries to determine what kind of file it is, and since the file info is at the end in an avi file it's not possible, which makes XP try and try.....

Thank you very much for helping me this time it worked. i'm now able again to delete all avi's. But there's also a counterside with doeing this. There aint no more advanced avi info anymore when using properties of explorer.
And you know what i think is realy weird. this wasn't any problem before i installed divx 5.0 pro.
