dv capture technical background needed (what happens exactly?)

hi,

i want to help a friend that ist very unhappy with capturing dv. his understandig of the process is, that a file is actually read from the tape directly. he compared capture under mac os with capturing under windows (xp) and has the feeling, since the quality is wores in his eyes, that windows kind of rerenders the file and the quality doesn´t turn out so good.

i offered my help so i will have him, his dazzle fast card and his cam over @ my house soon and i want to be preparred.

can anyone explain me the process and the different possibilities in detail? that would be a great help.

Windows doesn't rerender DV. As long as your editing software doesn't re-render anything (good and new software like Ulead Media Studio and Adobe Premiere doesn't), you can record the video back to camcorder and it's absolutely the same as before.

When you watch DV video on the computer it might look worse, depending on your player, codec settings and also your graphics adapter. That's what was probably better on your friends Mac.
Make the test: record the DV file back on the camcorder and you'll see there's no difference.
