View Full Version : The readability of 99min CDs

Hi,
I burnt a 99min CD and a 90min CD yesterday. I filled up an 862MB avi file into the 99 one, however, everytime I tried to click that file, my computer just hung and not able to respond anymore. I had to eject the CD to make the system back to normal.
On the other hand, the 90 min CD (a 787MB avi file inside) just worked fine so far.
So, I have a question for you 99min CD users:
Have you experienced problems playing these CDs? If so, how often?
I'm not expecting that these 99min CDs can work perfectly with all kinds of CD drives. If 70% of CD Drives support them, I'll keep using them. If it's below 50%, I'll just take my bussiness else where.
Or, do you have any ideas about maximizing the compatibility of these CDs? Like which burning programs do you use? The brand of the CD-Rs? The optimal settings? (such as writing speed, ISO standard...)
Thanks in advance.

I find 99min cd's dont work very well for data CD's but work ok for Audio CD's depending on your CD player.

So far ive burnt of over a 100 99mins cdrs, 99% of them for my dvd2svcd conversions, oh and probably 20 coasters getting the hang ofusing them. I can burn 975mb and complete dao mode at this capacity.
I have not encountered any problems with standalone players playing the discs, however my Pioneer 106 dvd drive refuses to let me image from them???, just goes mental at 80% read and sounds like the read head is repeatably banging into the side of the drive.
As a general rule of thumb, if your drive was able to write the disc it will play in the same drive.
I have experineced some odd failures, where the discfails to finish the lead out, ie all the data is there just hasnt been finalised.
I even have a 875mb svcd on a 80 min cdr, with incorrect track information as the data is actually 801mb.
All my 99 min disc have been Intenso 99s,
i use clonecd 3.3.2 and 5.5.8

I have been burning 99 minute discs with my TDK(lite-on clone) for a few months now. Other then the occasional coaster I have no problems burning the cue/bin files that DVD2SVCD creates up to 1gb in size. My Apex DVD player has no problem reading these all the way to the end.
Because of the extra expense of these discs I have no intentions of using them for audio or computer data. I much prefer my 80 minute discs I get for next to nothing as long as I can wait for the deals.
Considering that my 80 minute discs cost me as little as 5 cents each while the 99 minute are more like 70 cents each I am very frugal with the 99's.
I have never had a problem playing these discs in my computer, but again they are always SVCD's.
I cannot attest for any kind of longevity as the oldest disc I have might be 3 months old.

i suppose i should post my (limited) results so far...
i bought some 90-min cd-rs and have had no problems whatsover burning them. however, my cd-r drive won't read them, and it generally takes up to a minute for the dvd drive to start playing the cd. as soon as it starts playing it though, it doesn't seem to have any problems. i've been sticking with the 80-minute cds for most of my burns since i know they're reliable and i worry about the reliability of the 90-minute ones. but i dropped $20 on 25 of these things (shipping was expensive), so i need to use them eventually. tonight i'm using the extra 90 mb to attempt to fit moulin rouge onto one disc. i think it will be successful, and just barely. with 80-minute discs i don't think i would be able to do it.
