please help newb archive my avi's to divx

I have some cartoons that I captured at high res huffyuv avi that I put on low res vcd's.
These caps are 12gb each and I'd like to archive the avi's for later burning.
is their any way to compress these into smaller files with divx w/o loosing any (or much video quality)?
