temporalsmoother(3) vs codec noise reduction

What are people's thoughts about how noise reduction within the DIVX 5 codec compares to using the temporalsmoother with virtual dub? I've tried "light" pre-processing within the codec and the results appeared comparable to using tempersmoother(3) withing gordian knot/avisynth/vdub, but it was much faster to compress. I realise in terms of speed I may not be comparing like with like as perhaps "normal" pre-processing is closer in strength to temporalsmoother(3) noise reduction. Has anyone noticed a difference? Do you still prefer noise reduction through an external filter rather directly in the codec?

Actually I expirienced that build-in noise reduction turned out to be noticeably faster than TemporalSmoother in AviSynth. This is indeed amazing since it seems to work as a combination of temporal and spatial noise reduction. Light preprocessing seemed to me comparable with TemporalSmoother(2), normal wasn't too blurry but rather I suspect it to produce some kind of aliasing artefacts, which appeared as i encoded the movie Fight Club on that very level of preprocessing.
