View Full Version : DVD2SVCD Not Responding on 2nd VOB

I'm trying to backup "Meet The Parents" DVD -- below is the log file, although there's not much content. The first vob file is created okay with a file size of 1,048,542. However, the second vob file only gets to a file size of 212,000 and no further. When I launch Task Manager, it says DVD2SVCD is "Not Responding."

On the "DVD Rip" tab, I've selected "Internal Routines." If I select "Vstrip" the first vob file is created okay with a file size of 1,048,576. However, again, the second vob file is incomplete at 217,252 and none of the remaining vobs are created.

The ironic thing is that I've previously backed up this DVD with a prior version of DVD2SVCD (not exactly sure which version, but I believe it was 1.0.7b2). I wanted to re-do the backup with CVD Subtitles. The only thing "special" about this dvd is that it's anamorphic -- is anyone having problems backing up anamorphic dvd's with v1.0.7b4? Are these symptoms possibly of a bad DVD?

Also, I have about 24GB free, so the Norton Unerase warning in the log file should not have any impact, correct? BTW, I've disabled Norton's Unerase Protection and even killed the nprotect.exe process, but I still get the warning from DVD2SVCD -- anyone know why?

Initializing
WARNING! You seem to be using "Norton Unerase Protection" and
you want to delete the temporary files created by dvd2svcd.
This can cause DVD2SVCD problems. Even though DVD2SVCD deletes
the temporary files, Norton doesn't, therefore DVD2SVCD
might run into diskspace problems. I suggest that you stop the
"Norton Unerase Protection" Service.
Initializing finished.

Do other DVD's rip correctly with DVD2SVCD?

Try installing or re-installing the force aspi driver that is linked in the Q + A. It has been known to become corrupted and work wierd or not at all.

Load SmartRipper and see what mode it goes into. If it goes into WinI/O mode and not aspi you may have an aspi problem.

I hesitate to recomend this, but if all else fails.
If the internal routines or Vstrip don't work you can use SmartRipper, but try and get an older version(2.39 or before) if possible. Most of the problems noticed with DVD2SVCD and SmartRipper have happened after that version.

Although if it even started this shouldn't make a difference try authorizing the DVD with WinDVD or PowerDVD by playing the movie for a few seconds, then hitting pause and starting the rip and then closing the Software DVD player.

Mark, thanks for your response.

Based on your post, here's what I've found:

1. Other DVD's (about 10) have ripped correctly using DVD2SVCD internal routines.

2. I ran "aspichk" and it reported that aspi was properly installed and fully operational. I reinstalled anyway using ForceASPINT v4.601, rebooted, and reran "aspichk" and, again, everyting reported fine.

3. I loaded SmartRipper and it correctly went into aspi mode (not WinIO mode).

4. I authorized the DVD using WinDVD by playing the movie for a few seconds and hitting pause. I then to rip the vobs using SmartRipper and, low-and-behold, vob#1 created successfully (1,048,544KB), but vob#2 processing stopped at 223,074KB and basically hung.

At this point, I'm beginning to think there's a defect on the DVD itself. Any thoughts?

Bruce.

I tend to agree with you that there is an error in the DVD itself.
If SmartRipper won't work then I don't think there is much that will.
Whenever I have had really hard to rip DVD's SmartRipper would work when all else failed. It would slow way down, but still work.

If you really want to keep trying there is another ripper that seems to work even on really bad DVD's. I think it's called decrypter, but I not sure. It has been mentioned in this forum before. Try a search. I cannot be sure it will work well with DVD2SVCD, but it's worth a try if you can get it to rip.
I just found it on the doom9 download page. Give DVD decrpyter 3.0 a try. Like I said I don't know how well it will work with DVD2SVCD, but it seems you have no other choice.
