View Full Version : 9 hours to create 1h55min SVCD from NTSC DVD?

Is it supposed to take nearly 9 hours to convert less than 2 hours of DVD movie in NTSC format?

I have a decent system;
HP computer, model VL420
1.7 GHz processor (P4)
512 Mb SDRAM

Please see log file below;
Is there any setting which should be done differently to decrease the time? Does the VCDXbuild take longer time than not using that option?

Hope someone could help me. Thanks. / Parkmaul

As has been mentioned many times, you could turn off audio downsampling and change to three passes instead of 4 in CCE (depending on the bitrate it might effect the quality slightly). That would save you several hours. Actually 9 hours is not bad at all.

Reg turn-off of audio downsample; Do you mean I should "un-check" the box under the Audiotab "Audio 1 downsample 48 - 44.1 KHz".

I thought the SVCD had have the audio in 44.1 KHz?

To be completely in spec yes the audio has to be 44.1, but unless you are playing the SVCD on a stand alone SVCD and not your computer or a DVD player then 48 is just fine.

9 hours is actually a very good time for your machine. Consider this loose formula.
Take the minutes in the video and multiply it times the number of passes plus one since there is also a vaf (information) file created and then divide by the CCE speed rating. So lets take your movie length, the number of passes and I will make a guess at the speed.
1hr 55 minutes=115
115 x 5(4 pass + 1)/1.3= 7.37 hours of encode time.
This is purely video and does not take into account the other steps needed. Also this is a rough and not completely accurate forumula. CCE encoding speed is not constant. There are times it slows down for a little while and then speeds back up. Plus it is just an estimate.

9 hours is SWEEEEEEEEEEEETTTTTTTTTTTTTT....
I thought I had good times at 12 hours or so on encoding.

My goal is 6 hours on a 2hour movie.

Speed good?
Hi,

iv you have a pal dvd it better to deinterlace, than the picture is better to show on pc , cause it dont flicker, but it takes longer time as no - interlace.

change the passes to 3 as vbr.

using the bicubic resize takes the longest time , but its the highest quality, the bilinear is about 10 % faster , the quality is quite good, the fastest is simple resize its very fast, the quality is good. my first encoding was with simple resize and i was happy abouth my first result.

now im using bicubic , but it takes much more time.

my system is a AMD athlon 1400c 512 kb infineon sd ram, 2 x 20 gb 5400 rpm ide raid,
my speed in cce is about 0.76 , and i think the speed is good, i de interlace the movie because its pal. in ntsc the process should be faster.

my question for all user is!!

is the speed good? my feeling says its okay, but now i would like to hear other oppinions!!!

I have a similar pc config.
1.2 amd 512 ram ,raid.

But I have 7200 rpm drives..

I normally get 1.025 or so in CCE...12 hours for a 2 hour movie..NTSC 4 passes VBR

I have a 40gb boot drive with 35 gb free...and I uninstall /reinstall dvd2svcd and also defrag it everyday b4 I make a SVCD.....works great this way for me..

I have buddies who have 5400 rpm drives and low space on them and they only get like .33 speed..takes me 12 hours to make a svcd..takes them 48 hours.....

Have thought about increasing cpu to 2.0 AMD but don't think the speed increase will amke a big diff in CCE speed.
