Hi guys,
I am starting to play around with DVD Maestro but every time I try to import a video asset I get the message "The video asset lenght is greater than the maximum allowed" even if is only 12 min long.
Any ideas?
Thanks,

This was a fault common on a certain warez build of Maestro.

Demux and import video/audio again.

Hi easy2Bcheesy,
is there a workaround for this?

There is no workaround - you need to get a newer version of Maestro, preferably 2.915 (the one with the fault you mention is very old).
I can't help here as I bought Maestro.

How much did you pay for it? Was it a turnkey system or just the software?

It cost £25,000 just for the software. The turnkey systems were £30,000.
Over the last 18 months, our company has shifted close to a million DVDs so it has definitely paid for itself :)

What kind of encoder card are you using with DVDMaestro? Do you work with duplication or just with authoring?

Encoder card? Or decoder card? With Maestro I got a Cinemaster board supplied - this was August 1999, before Netstream was being sold. The MPEG2 encoder software Heuris was also thrown in for some reason.
I'm not concerned with duplication - this is done by an external company.

Ok, thank you.
I meant encoder card. I'm looking for a hardware encoder that's why I ask.
I'd like to ask you abouth making a directors voiceover mix on the DVD with Maestro. If you choose Commentaries on a DVD than you can hear the original soundtrack behind and the voiceover in the front.
What you think, is it a extra mixed audio-track or just using the Karaoka function.
If it is the Karaoka than I could check the standalone within a Command Sequence, if it is Karaoka capable than I could mix 2 audio tracks together if not than just switch over to the Commentaries track.

Canopus's Amber MPEG2-encoding card used to get ok reviews, but for the most part you will get better results encoding with TMPGEnc or Cinemacraft, unless you are willing and able to spend several thousand pounds/dollars on some serious hardware. Cheap Hardware encoders never seem to cut the mustard.

Incidentally, the 10minute limit is a fault on the SMB release of 2198a/2199a. TFL's 2199a release did not suffer this fault.

the Amber is a good card (got two of them here) and it comes with v2.5 of DVDVirtuoso as well, only thing is it wont compress lower than 4mbit.
probably the better card to get now from canopus would be the DVStorm with the MPEG-2 module (the module is basically an Amber anyway), but im not sure if you can compress under 4mbit either.
the company that made bitrate viewer did reviews of hardware and software encoders, go take a read i dont have the url handy tho.

That link is the TECO one I included above. Pity the Futuretel product they reviewed is no longer available :(
Me, I'll stick to Software for the time being, even if it does mean I am restricted to off-line encoding times. Oh how I WISH I had the cash handy for an MPX-3000!!! :(

In this days I'm using a DV500 plus with DVcam to Mp2 encoding. It has a nice quallity, isn't the best but useable. The problem is that for most of the editing process I'm using a DPS Nle with Component video 10bit digital. To encode from this system I'd like to use an other PC with hardware encoder. Y/C out from DPS into the Y/C inn of the encoder. These cards I can buy hasn't got Component inn.
I know the TecoLtd's. I had to buy the bitrateview to fix the userinfo spike in the pinnacle mp2 stream.

Every Directors Commentary I've ever seen (and done myself) takes the form of two audio channels. You simply the add the voiceover over the existing audio, lowering the volume of the audio when the voice comes in. You're right - a simple command sequence is used to choose between them when you play the movie. Easy.
Karaoke functions, I believe, only work with DVD players that support Karaoke, which isn't all of them. I never touch these features myself.
