In the GKnot guide for DivX 5, Doom 9 states that I should add a job for the 1st pass first, then one for the 2nd pass, and then run them. But when I do this, Virtualdub tells me it can't do it because it can't find the .log and .mv files.
Also, when I press the button to start the jobs, Virtualdub just exits. Does it work in the background or anything?

Beware that, when saving the avi file, yo have to tick the "Add operation to job list and defer processing" option. Only then you proceed to configure the second pass, and then save the avi again and tick that option again.
Read the guide carefully, it's all there ;)

make sure that you dont mix 1st and 2nd pass in your job order.
The 1st pass job creates the .log and .mv files and then the 2nd pass will use those files. If for any reason your 2nd pass job starts first, you'll get the said error message about the missing files.

Hmm okay, that works. Now where did Virtualdub go when I pressed Start? It's not in the processes list in WinXP...

on my XP system, vdub doesnt go anywhere when processing a job. In fact, I get two windows : vdub stays there and the job control windows indicates what's the job's status. So no, I havent seen vdub working "in the background".
if it suddenly disappears from your system, it means it has crashed.. sorry!
may I suggest we move the discussion to the virtualdub forum?

Sure, sorry for posting here. Very strange that it quits, I don't get any error messages =\
