Have you guys noticed any quality improvement using GMC?

I've only encoded two movies with DivX 5 Pro, orignally I used q-pel and bi-directional encoding. But following the advise of alot people on the board I decided to re-encode without q-pel and enable GMC.

To be honest, i can't see any differance enabling gmc. How about you guys? I think i'll just stick to bi-directional encoding as thats the only error-free option at the moment...

that's what I thought... Looks like i'll stick to b-frame only too. Even if there was a minor improvment using GMC i don't think its worth the risk of the artifact it can cause.

Ya im allso giving up GMC atm. So far i have not seen any visible quality improvement, artefacts instead i have seen.

i've encoded a couple of movies with divx 5.0 to try the codec. at first i used b-frames, Qpel & gmc. but when i tried to play them on my P2-400 it had no chance in hell. so i reencoded them with b-frames only and my P2-400 had no problem during playback + the quality were better (no Qpel shaking). so i quess Qpel & gmc use a lot of resources when decoding.

no artifacts for me yet, but no visual improvement either. I think i'll keep both q-pel and gmc off for now. Like I said before, its not worth the risk of artifacts in the encode.

I've encoded the some video 10 times. GMC + B-Frames, no Q-Pixel, last 2 encoding at different resolution. In every video the same artefact is present at 23min e 43sec.

Have you tried using Divx5 non-pro, and have you tried Divx Pro with just bframes?

Nope, and it almost doubles CPU usage during playback so I only use B-frames.

I have only tried Divx 5 PRO that's an evolution of Divx 5.

I've encoded again the video without GMC (only B-Frame activated)

There is again the artefact, again at 23min and 41 sec.

I see that this time corresponds exactly at the end of first VOB and the beginning of second VOB.

If someone has some suggestion in merit..

GMC is actually not MPEG4 spec-compliant in DivX5 at the moment (a marker bit is missing), so I wouldn't switch it on for much more than testing purposes.

I have done Swordfish (which I own) wih GMC and the result was stunning. I then used the very same settings on a U2 Concert (which I own) and I could not believe how bad things looked. Artefacts left, right and centre. I now gonna just try the same with no GMC.

Does GMC double cpu usage during playback???
My work machine is a P3 933mhz and that finds it hard to play DivX5 content. Plays ok if I lower the filter quality level, but a 933 should have no problems (I think).
