I am not creating a menu - just the movie. I get a warning that 'No First Play Assigned' after I've finished compiling. Does this mean it won't autostart in the DVD player?
Thanks.

Yes. It will just be stopped and not play until you hit play. If you want the movie to play after its inserted you have to assign a first play. Highlight your project name in the tree view and click the connections tab. First play is the first field, assign a target and thats it.

but it would be more brilliant if people followed the forum rule1 and read my guide before posting :/ my maestro guide would've told you the answer

I founf that a bit daunting though. I've only been doing this for a few days. Surely this forum is to help newbies like me too? I WILL follow your guide when I get to menus, but I'm really pleased that I've actually just created my first ever DVD.

newbie status doesn't prevent you from reading the guide ;) On the contrary.. makes it even more necessary. And I'm sure you agree that I can't have 20 different guides on the same program in order of increasing difficulties.
if you want to get started with DVD authoring maestro is not the way to go.. it's a pro DVD authoring tool. That's why I wrote DVD authoring guides in order of increasing difficulties (except for scenarist and maestro which are inversed).. the oldest ones treat the more basic options.. that's where you should start out.
No hard feelings but please make sure it doesn't happen again.
