Well, i just made a little test with, you guessed ,The Replacements trailer :D

I couldn't noticed any problems with the colour, but then again i never had the bug Kastro reported. So it could still be there, or not.

The speed of your ds filter seems a little better, but still not enough for my slow P2-350, at least with deringing option enabled.
BUT don't change anything because of this, it's a P2-350, nobody still has a P2-350 anymore (just me, in my work ;)

But i must say that the quality still remains the same compared with the older builds (Koepi's for instance). And, IMHO (and i am a big xvid fan, you guys should now this by now), still a little inferior to divx5. I believe that only with B-frames xvid will get the upper hand again.
Please i am not trying to make a battle out of this, i just think that is much better for the future of xvid if each one expresses his honest opinion on this matters, so the developers can...develope (:D) the codec better.

Forgot:

My settings were: all default, with motion search precision 6 and costum MPEG qauntization. The file size was spot on, but i believe that we don't have any problems with this for sometime now.

07-03-02 build (i think it was your vs7 compiled filter)

i was getting 22-24 fps on a 624x384 with all options except dering(c)enabled and now i am getting 17-20

I just saw that vxvas has diferent conclusions about the speed of the ds filter.
I want to say that is better to trust him than me, because with the comp i have, all ds filters seem slow. I just had the impression that this latest ds filter was a little faster, but i could be wrong, because all ds filters in my p2 are slow.

Well, its pretty hard for it too be slower code, so it probably is VC7 making the difference,

Tom's got the source now, hopefully he'll be able to make the dering filter go like lightning.... :)

& that should sort everything....im surprised its that much slower for you though (then again VC6 is quite old)

Ill start offering both versions, I think.

Yes, Tom's got the source now, but Tom's never even compiled XviD successfully yet. I hadn't even checked out the correct CVS module. Don't expect me to just ride in on a white horse and save the day over my lunch break. ;)

But I'm working on it. Gratified at least that you guys think I can do something useful here.

this time i used a 624x288 video without sound

all options in your filter enabled

in my comp (cel2 566@850)

faster

vc7 build 05-03(i think) included in koepis 07-03 release
vc6 build 12-03
vc6 build 02-03

the diferrence was about 2fps one build from the next

could you upload a vc 7 build of 12-03?

Thanks vxvas. I got it from stormpage finally.

setup encoding test while I am away at work. Will check once I go home tonite. As for capture, I did some testings last nite, and the new core rox! Very fast and very good quality. Will see how it fair at encoding.

Once you get a taste of the xvid filter, you never want to go back to divx filter or anything else, likewise with xvid :D

- based on the CVS sources from 12.03.2002, ~18:30h CET.
- removed some debugmessages in the core from the rate control algorithms, they look
nasty in 2 pass encoding sessions
- reimplemented modulated quantizer type
- Added Nic's new Directshow Filter with MMXified brightness routines
- Added Nic's AviC to change the FourCC of your videos so you can test around with different DSFs

Ok guys, let me tell you a story...

Last night, I wanted to make different tests with XviD, that is to say playing with resolution, bitrate, configuration options, to see what XviD's new core was really capable of.

So I ripped a trailer of Lord of the Ring (2 min 19 s long), which presents fast and slow scenes, dark and light as well; moreover, the trailer has a (very ?) good quality.


The first encoding was:
1100 kbs, 640x272
1st pass:
motion search precision: 6
quantization type: MPEG
max KF: 300
min Q: 1
max Q: 20
2nd pass:
quantization type: modulated (thanx Koepi)
desired file size: about 18000 ko
KF boost: 25%
min KF: 10
lumi: off
other options: see 1st pass or default

Conclusion: the encoding was fast (on my little PIII 500), the video is perfect, sharpen, no blocks (or so small...too much for my bionic eyes...), the colors are very nice too, its size about 18 Mo; in a few words: everything turned perfect :)


Then I tried do decrease the bitrate, to see when the video would look very dirty, that is to say the minimal bitrate it was posible to use with XviD (in fact I wanted to know how many CDs i would need for a average movie, about 2 hours long, one or two...). Just changed the bitrate and resolution without changing other options.

So i tried 900 kbs: very good; 700 kbs? Quite good. Ok, you wanna play ? 600 kbs. Good (better than some DivX i already had to see...What about 400 kbs ? At this point, i was sure my XviD would say: No, please, i can't anymore...But no, i produced a correct video, really watchable (sorry for that word :)), i mean, of course you can see some blocks, but this is the kind of quality I am ready to have when I'm so bored that i just want to watch something, for free...And it only was quite dirty (i mean, still watchable but dirty) at 200 kbs...Amazing, really amazing, because 400 kbs is only 50 ko/s...the speed that cable or adsl allow.

Ok, maybe everybody already knew this point, maybe i just still have my newbie's eyes, but i didn't guess Xvid was so powerfull at so-low bitrates. Maybe this comes because this trailer can be compressed pretty well. But I want to say to you, guys, who have created XviD:

Pretty good work, keep going that way, you have my entire respect.

My first test using XviD was to try it at 128kbps....it was the best codec at that bitrate then (compared to DivX)...& that was ages & ages ago :)
