I've been trying to come to a conclusion about all this matrix stuff with CCE and have finally. Here's my summary -

1. Patching new matrices into CCE does make a difference on playback but not necessarily for the better when using CCE 2.5. I tried two encodes using CCE 2.5 patched with 'Angels' matrix. One with 1passVBR that had vertical wiggley lines on playback that was noticeable on many facial shots. The second encode was the same matrix with MultipassVBR 1 pass (actually two, with the vaf creation), just to see if it improved. It did not, the lines were still there. I repatched CCE 2.5 to the 'Standard' matrix, re-encoded again and the lines where gone.

I then loaded CCE 2.64, encoded with 'Angels' matrix again. Upon playback there were no lines at all in facial areas or anywhere else.

Summary - For DVD, do not patch CCE 2.5 with any matrix other than 'standard' which is what it comes with I presume. Doing so will cause improper decoding from your playback device because CCE 2.5 can only write it's standard matrix to the MPEG2 header of the file it's encoding.

mb1 has stated this previously, I just had to confirm for myself that it was true.

With versions 2.6x CCE can write proper matrices to MPEG2 header and hence proper decoding in your playback device. Problem is 2.6x is a lot slower than 2.5 because of VFAPI.

Comparing the 2.5 encode using 'standard' matrix with the 2.64 encode with 'angels' matrix I could only see a very, if any improvement in quality. Maybe slightly less noise, slightly sharper but is it worth it to get that but loose speed? I'm still trying to decide.
