if you want a mpg movie you don't need to convert to avi first.just convert your sound to wav then load the d2v file that dvd2avi gave you into the video part of tmpg and the wav into the audio part.
if you try to convert a avi that has the audio in it then tmpg can run into problems.it is best to do you audio seperatly.

just use dvd2avi to extract the audio from your vob files to wav.
heres how:
1.Audio>track number - make sure track1 is ticked
2.Audio>DolbyDigital - make sure "decode"is ticked
3.Audio>48->44.1khz - make sure"non"is ticked
4.File>Save Project
Note:if your movie is PAL make sure "forcefilm"is not ticked in Video menu.if your movie is NTSC make sure it is ticked.
after you should hsve a wav file and a d2v file.
load the d2v file into tmpg "video source"box
load the wav file into tmpg "audio source"box.
make sure to laod the appropriate template for the kind of mpg you want(eg.VCD,SVCD ect).
