Partitions with XP

I use XP and I want to remap my HD which is composed of 3 partitions:
c:ntfs (5 Go)
d:fat32 (30 Go)
e:dvd rom
f:cd writer
g:ntfs (5 Go)
->c:ntfs (10 Go) and d:ntfs or fat32 if I can't keep my data (30 Go)
Partition Magic doesn't do the job, it simply ignores the changes. I've also tried the built in drive manager in XP, but when I launch the mapper it says that it's impossible to perform the task because I don't have the permission. But I'm logged as Adm. Does it come from the network, as it's said in the help files ? Is there something with the network that I don't undestand well (I use a private network with my flatmate: just 2 pc's)

are you using XP compatible version of partition magic?
i didn't have problems converting from fat32 to ntfs while keeping all my data..

you can't convert from ntfs back to fat32 w/o complete format...

once you have made the changes in partition magic you need to press the apply changes button.it then reboots to dos and applies the changes there.

I'm using PM 7 and I successfully formated the G partition from linux to ntfs. So I do know that I have to press "apply chages" :eek:
The drive mapper doesn't work after reboot: no change done !!!
I just wanna fusion c: and g: into one c: ntfs partition. With XP built in tools ?

You might have tried this already, but here's my observations with Partition Magic -

First of all, make sure to defrag and run disk scans on your drives before attempting any PM action, I have found that disk errors and or heavily fragmented drives don't work well with PM.

Secondly, don't run Partion Magic in windows to make your changes, boot to the Rescue Disks and make your changes there. I can't stress this enough! Many times I've had problems trying to do something with PM in the windows GUI and it would just fail. When I've done it from the rescue floppies, it always works. I've actually put a tiny DOS partition on my XP machines with the rescue PM program on it, so I can boot to PM dos without having to do the "floppy shuffle".

I have another question on XP. I initially had Win98se on my C:, then installed XP on H: (same disk of course). Now I want to wipe my C: and use it for storage. The problem is that XP boots from the root of C: using the system files 'ntldr' 'boot.ini' plus one or two more. Now I don't think I can just copy these files to the root of H: and have the machine boot properly can I?

There has to be a way to do it. Maybe I could just wipe C: then use the XP bootable CD to fix the boot problem if it won't start?

I can't believe everyone who loads XP will keep Win98, or their previous operating system, on their machine forever more. What a waste of space.

Any suggestions would be appreciated or links to sites with info on how to do this. Thanks

I've had huge problems with Windows XP and Partition Magic. I finally realized that I can use PM to format my drives, but once I install XP I must use the built in drive manager to make any changes, otherwise I lose partions, data, drives. I've also given up running a dual boot system with XP until I can afford a hard drive switch and a third hard drive, I'm not even going to try to install Linux. I'm sure I could make it work eventually, but installing Windows three times in one week would make anyone give up.
