Encoding speeds for Xvid?

Hi all. First off, I really like the XVid codec. The quality it produces on 2 pass mode is IMHO superior to other codecs. Combine this with VBR mp3 and it really rocks.

What I would like t know is what sort of encoding speed should I be looking at with a P4 1.5 Ghz, 128 MB ram? I get around 17-20 fps on avarage with the first pass. The second pass sees an increase of about 1 fps. Is this normal, or should i be able to get a full realtime 25 fps (PAL)?

Well, it depends on lots of things.
Is your ram SDRAM or RDRAM? What resolution do you encode? Are there any filters involved?

It's 800Mhz rambus. I use GordianKnot to frame serve to Virtualdub. No filters. Encoding resolution is 720x304, audio is done in a seperate process.
Xvid options are left on default. Motion search precision is on 5 - Very High.
(I'm still fairly green with Xvid....)
Virtualdub plays the video at faster than realtime, if i just play without encoding.

Well, i have an AMD XP 1,55 Ghz, with SDRAM :(
I use almost tha same settings (sharp bicubic), and at that resolution, i only get about 18-22 fps, depending on the movie.
So i believe you are very well. :)

About the xvid options, don't worry too much, i already read posts about people getting better results by letting xvid do all the choices in the encoding process. ;) (Hum... Teegedeck? :D

I forgot:

Beware that the most recent builds have a option called costum MPEG matrix. When this option is choosen, the encoding gets very slow, because this option still isn't MMX optimized.

Someone correct me if i am wrong, please.

Your right rui, but it also effects the normal MPEG mode (making it a lot slower)

Why not first add the "resize, crop, deinterlace" features to be able to use the Fast Recompress mode of VirtualDub ?

It really speed up the process with DivX5...

Humm... ? I have always used the fast recompress feature with xvid.

sure and the 2 passes modes really increases the quality...
you should have read more guides before using VDUB. Look for avisynth for more details and read Doom9's guides...
