View Full Version : Why isn't my desktop Sony DVD player playing?

Just recently burned a pair of CUE/BIN files on a CD-R using VCDEasy and CDRDAO successfully. The DVD player on my laptop (WinDVD) recognizes it and even displays "VideoCD 2.0" when playing it.

When I try playing it on my Sony DVP-S550D player, it simply ignores that there is a disc inside - "No Disk", even though the player is suppose to play DVDs, CDs and VCDs. Read through it's manual and it says it supports both VCD 1.1 and 2.0 versions.

Has anyone experienced this before?

It probably does not play CD-R (or at least not your brand of CD-R). Try using Princo brand CD-R or some CD-RW and see if that helps. Pressed VCDs will run, I guess ... but VCD does not mean CD-R.
Also check http://www.vcdhelp.com/dvdplayers.php for compatibility information. Sounds like it is one of those players with a single-wavelength laser pickup :(.

That was it. I tried burning it on a CDRW and the player recognized it. I guess the player is very picky with CDRs.

Yes, Sony DVD players are well known to be very picky on what media you burn the VCD. Chinese & Korean DVD Players are the easiest ones. I have a Sony DVD Player & a Chinese one (SAMPO). My Sony frustrated me quite a bit (I have to use Sony brand CDR or CDRW for it to recognize), while the Chinese one accept whatever CD brand I burned. After while, you have to wonder what's up with that?

Nowaday, I just used my Sony to play the commercial DVDs, while I'm using the SAMPO for everything else.
