i just do standard rips: GNot->VDub (2pass) ->Nandub (video-VBR audio mux). mostly 640x272 and bitrate between 750 and 1200 depending on 1 or 2 CD rip and movie length.

I see a lot of conflicting info on divx and doom9 boards.

when did a rip selecting all the 3 options, i got a lot of junk in the resulting avi file. may be i was doing something else wrong.

unfortunately, i dont have the time to constantly test combinations for every movie. i would like to settle on 1 combination.

I am looking for your wisdom on what options I should select.

Also, should I select different options depending on how I am going to view it (PC vs on an NTSC TV using a TV-Out)?

You should not use QP, at least for now. That feature can produce artifacts in your avi.

Should I use it in my rips? I only have an athlon 700 MHz CPU so I don't think my baby can handle the new options in decoding :(

I have an 800 Thunderbird, and have no problems playing DivX 5.0 Pro movies with all the goodies enabled when encoding...

I'm sure you will have no problem. I have a Celeron 800 MHz running on an old BX motherboard, and even when all the post-processing options are enabled (usually, they aren't), the processor is only at 60-70% while decoding a 672x288 movie with b-frames. And I'm pretty sure your T-Bird is equal or faster than my Celeron so...

I find this very strange? :confused: Some of my friends told me that for optimal use of the new options you needed something like 1 GHz+ (they had read that on divx.com's forums)

@ChaosOverlord: I'd like to see that, honestly :). I've got 2 systems, one being a Duron@750Mhz (the core is chipped, too!) on the ALi Magik1 chipset (so it's no powerhouse), and with post-processing all the way at level 6, playing a movie i personally encoded w/ all DivX 5.0 Pro enhancements, i had no issues. It's all good man!! The CPU's load is 60-85% though, so i wouldn't use anything lower than this.

My 1.33ghz athlon can't handle 640x480 playback (of divx5) with AC3 audio and DirectVobSub subtitles with full postprocessing. If I turn postprocessing off it plays normal speed.

Are some players less CPU intensive? I use WMP 6.4

@ThePanda: Duuuude either something's seriously messed up w/ your comp or DirectVobSub uses up 600Mhz+ of juice on its own... i've never heard of anything DivX being that CPU intensive except encoding. Can i get your exact system specs? (board/chipset, BIOS, etc.)

Wyld: Hey I have MSI K7T Turbo (KT133a) w/ 768MB SDRAM (PC133). Now that I think about it, I remember that DirectVobSub has an option to double the subtitle resolution if they are a certain size or smaller and it said that feature needed a CPU of the 1ghz class. That's probably where the slowdown was.
