SBC 3.11 still ahead of adware

I read in Dooms last codec review sbc still rules. My independent tests with full movie rips and viewing side by side on a 32" proscan monitor still shows divx5 not as crisp (as divx412) as the old faithful 311 SBC. I do hope doom will compare this new adware to the old free ware. I have not finished testing but initial results are making me still burn 311 cds.

I see lots of results of 412 compared to 5 but have we all forgotten what has got us here Respectfully Nano

True, I noticed the very same thing. Besides that I find a significant reduction of macroblocks and less pixelation around sharp edges which I couldn't get rid of with 3.11.
Still testing though, but this will be a very interesting time:)

by this you mean the illegal, hacked version of Microsoft MPEG4 V3 refered to as DivX 3.11?

he means about the relatively new, freeware and 100% legal for personal use (for your own DVDs, too) DivX 4.12 :D

ok :D Sorry if i sounded harsh, but i hear a lot people who seem to think that 3.11 was some kind of wonder codec released as freeware by some altruistic genius programmer.

I believe it is a great codec. For many of us... its the easiest thing in the world to set up nandub and let it produce some excellent encodes. Unfortunately the codec has great trouble in dark scenes as well as in alot of uniform color. I primarily use Nandub for anime. When it comes to normal movies I think i'm going to stick to Xvid. I was testing out Xvid vs D5 vs SBC the other day using a clip for Titan AE (where Kale is out cutting apart space junk) no matter how high i bumped up the filesize, Xvid and D5 had terrible 'haloing' artifacts all over the spacesuits of the characters while SBC did not have this. Granted at the same filesizes the background looked about 5x better then SBC but the characters looked terrible.

Anybody had any of these issues when encoding anime? with D5 or Xvid?

Yes, I do agree that SBC can produce very good encodes. However:
* SBC is not the codec. It is a method that squeezes the best achievable quality out of DivX3. Without it, DivX would be much worse than any of the new. Still it is the end result that counts, and here SBC encodes can still compete with the newer codecs.
* I do not agree that Nandub is as easy to use as DivX4+. I think you mean it is easy for experienced encoders, well i have to agree.
* Even if the newer codecs are only as good as an SBC encode, I think we should all move on to some ISO compliant codec, because DivX3 has no future.

The comparassions are slithly silly at this stage. DivX3.11 has been pushed to its limit with nandub while XviD and DivX5 are still in the cradle and has lots and lots of room for improvement.
