If you were to take a movie, rip it on the hard drive, then use 2-pass variable bitrate and make an .avi divx;) file then use tmpegenc and put up the standard VCD template, would that give you better quality then DVD2AVI straight to TMPEGENC?

Encoding from one format to another is always a bad idea....
