Problems syncing MPEG2 with AC3 stream

I have a film which is encoded in DIVX video, and AC3 audio. Plays fine.

I've now extracted the video using direct stream in virtual dub, and also saved the ac3 stream (using the save to wav option). The AC3 stream plays fine on it's own, as does the video.

Now, using bbMpeg, I'm encoding the video stream and using the multiplex option to, well, mux them together, and the audio is out of sync. Fine at the beginning, but gets progressively worse.

I've created a short-snippet of the original AVI, 15 seconds long, and saved with the huffy codec as well as a direct stream. Same issue. If I get the first few seconds in sync by delaying the audio stream, it's out at the end.

The original divx is 23.976 fps. I've tried encoding (into mpeg2) at 23.976, 24, 25, 29.976 - all the same. Something im missing here ! And bbMpeg is the only thing I can find that can mux the ac3 audio with the video stream (freely).

OK - so, running the resulting mpeg2 through powerdvd is ok (at 23.976 fps as is the original avi)

If I run it through my Creative DXR2 card, that seems to get out of synce quite badly. I only use this so I can deliver MPEG to the tv system downstairs to watch such things. Normal dvd's play fine.

So, the dxr2 software seems to be losing sync - any one know what i need to do in the encoding process to normalise this ?

Do you add the 3:2 pull down flag?

I've selected 3:2 pulldown - and that's certainly sorted it. But playback is corrupted. Large green areas flickering (over 50% of the picture).

The file plays back fine in powerdvd.

Again, maybe there's something else im missing ? I've selected 23.976 fps (same as the original).

What is your resolution and why don't you let the DVD authoring software to mux the video and audio?
