Never thought I would say this but I'm leaving fairuse/madrona and going to gordian knot..been playing with it about a week now to learn how to use it...top reasons for me are:

1) Slow updates to fairuse.
2) Gordian Knot supports divx4 and soon divx5
3) Gordian Knot does not use proprietary rip format so can view movie on HD.
4) Gordian Knot can be used for both dvd rips and to encode mpg downloaded from my ati tv capture card.
5) The divx rips I have done take only 3 hours total instead of 10+ hours with fairuse and look better to me due to more control over settings.

Yall take care and best wishes.

Hallo,

Two weeks ago I thought the same.

FairUse is very slow and sometimes even on 2 or 3 CD Rips in HQ I got macroblock errors after the cross cutter.

I changed to G-Knot and made some rips.

For me the results if I rip in HQ 60 min. per 700 MB CD with 160 kb Dolby Surround sound FU gets a lot better results on difficult scenes.

F.e.: Robocop 2

There is a scene approx. 2 min. long where two guys are talking in a room. More than half the picture are grey walls.

With G-Knot the Walls are full of blocks, even with a datarate of 1700 kb on a 2 CD rip.

With FU the Scene is perfect.

And the second reason:

I tried a whole day to rip Robocop 1 from the Robocop Trilogy Box (UK Version)

The disc has this new Integrated Branching. There are the Theatrical Cut and the Director's Cut (equal to the Criterion) on the disc.

I tried nearly 20 rippers an no one was able to rip the DC correct. This IB uses some trick like multi angle and some chapters have 2 cell id's.

And guess what, I tried it with FairUse 0.30, a programm which is nearly a half year old and FU beats that fucking disc. It ripped the DC correctly where Smart Ripper, DVD Decrypter and even vStrip couldn't do the job.

So I've only one thing to say.

FU2k, all the guys shouting FU is crap, no audio, .... don't listen to them.

The only thing I hope you'll do is to make it faster in the next version. All other things like audio, ... can be done later, FU is good enough as it is at the moment.

Last but not least, DivX 4.xx and 5 are crap, 3.11 rules !!!

Not to mention that FU does auto-IVTC making it a natural for tough sources.

Not to mention that FU/Madrona is *still and probably forever* the best tool for ripping all those DVD extras without hassle.

And don't forget the nostalgia value... ;) Just kidding FU2K.

And FairUse is simply easier to use and more reliable. It takes time, but I know my final DivX will look good and fit to the size I want.

I hope FU stays around for a long time. I'm always directing people to it that have trouble learning how to do DivX and they are always pleased with the program.

If GKnot had the same step by step by step approach it might have something...but it doesn't. Even trying to follow Doom9's guide I could get it to work for me. FU worked the very first time I used it...and with Madrona as an add on its perfect.

I love FairUse. =)
