I just made a 1 CD rip of "Blow" with divX 5 and xvid.

res: 608x256
settings: the ones that are usually recommended in the doom9 guides

I'm impressed with the quality of divX5, it's better then xvid:
way less blocky. Also divX 5 is NOT blurry (compared to divX4).

I also have an SBC version with res 512, but it's a bit blurry. Gonna do one with resolution 608x256 so I can compare this one too.

Anyway, divX5 seems to do a good job!

I just read some other posts that say DivX 5.0 sucks. I don't really understand. DivX 5.0 really got me better quality then Xvid!

Don't give up on this one yet! (I am no divX 5.0 promotor or so... hehe)

I agree with you all that divx does not SUCK. But at the same time it is not the revolutionary codec that divx network has claimed it to be. There are still problems with macro blocks in dark or solid color areas. Divx 5.0 has been able to improve on 4.12 with smaller file sizes at the same bitrate but it has not improved in it's image handling much (a little though, take a look at the welding pics). I have some pics of an encode that I have done with both 4.12 and 5.0 at the same bitrate with the same avs file and they were almost identical (Divx 5.0 was a tad better in one snapshot), but the divx 5.0 was about 100mb smaller. I have encoded the same avs again with divx 5.0 at a higher bitrate to use that saved space but have yet to find improvements in the trouble areas (first set of pics, the safe). I think the source has maxed out at that resolution and not improvements can be made with out upping the res (block would probably still be there) and/or filtering, smoothing a little. I am also going to try the quater pixel setting to see if that helps, but I have read that only a resoltution of 1/4 the orig really needs this setting to be selected. pics here (http://www.dandirksen.com/divx5.asp)

to me it seems like atm DivX5 gives a sharper image if u encode low motion scenenes, but on real action scenes Xvid rulez!!

I tend to agree with the examples given, but I have not gotten in to xvid encoding, maybe I should! I am fairly impressed though with the file size improvements by divx 5, though it does not improve quality much for 2 CD rips, it allows higher bitrates for 1 cd rips (better quality here) but for 2 CD rips where a lot of the time drf/quants are usually always at 2 anyway (saturated) the improvements do not help except for file size, but not enough to get it down to 1 cd with AC3 sound (I almost always use it).

A step in the right direction... From what I understand, when xvid has b-frame support it will be the codec to recon with...

Well I'd argue that it already is the codec to recon with:D B-Frames support will just be the icing onthe cake.
