View Full Version : DivX5 Pro Ad and non-ad really the same?

I found some speculations around the web, why DivX5 Pro Ad-Version is 2,9 MB and non-Ad 3,0 MB.

Some say, the non-Ad Version maybe even better/bigger or at least something else than the non-ad version...

Someone bought DivX5 Pro and can compare it with the Ad-Version to clear this up?

it's the same feature wise except that the pro has no ads.. I don't think the developers would blatantly lie to me.. that's more a marketing people thing.. in any case.. I haven't tried the full pro yet because I think it's only fair I work with the version that I encourage everybody else to use

Well, I don't think so either...but if anyone has the full pro (without ads), a short comparison would be appreciated... :-)

one possible reason for the size difference is copy protection.. divx5 pro ad checks for some registry key, divx5 pro pay must check for something else... the programmers have assured me that the pro pay version is exactly the same as the pro ad version.. there's no hidden things there.. if you pay you won't get anything more codec wise.. you just don't have to worry about all the ad ware.. and if it makes you happy.. I'm going to install this box now and will post filesizes and dates afterwards.. and look if there's a new feature though I'm 99.999% sure that there's no diff whatsoever

Okay, thanx... :-) But maybe there will be a filesize-difference in the divx.dll, because it has different code (one adware, one copyprotection stuff)? Anyway, thanx for checking this out... :-) I don't expect to get surprised...just to be sure...

well, the difference is quite big my smart jasmine....

the ad package is quite heavy, maybe if you strip it from the ad version, it will reduce around 1.5mb,
and the non add is 3mb......

...with this? Better try to spell my name right..

What do you think we are talking about here? Maybe it adds another 1.5 MB of whatever junk (copy-protection)?

i was trying to say that the add version "without adds" wont be reduced only to 2.8m, but much more.....
then what kind of copy protection should they have added Jazmin ??

im very sorry to have wasted space in your cute thread, wont happen anymore.

Despite the fact you're trying to annoy me, I'll try to be constructive...

Am I right you're saying that ad-version and pay-version are most likely not the same? Give us some proof...btw: the copy-protection stuff was (see above) brought up by doom9.

I was so bored today so I wrote a little batch file that does what Doom9 decribes. I'm not sure, if it will work with Win9x/ME.
Any feedback is welcome :)

@jasmin: I'm sorry but I updated the CD that contains all my DVD stuff.. it's an RW, and it worked fine on the comp I burned it on, but on this comp (back at uni) I can't read it.. so until I go visit my parents again I can't test anything

@Doom9: No problem, don't hurry... :-)

okay.. I finally got around to installing it. There's one catch.. I'm already on version 5.01 (non public beta test version).

The dll size is 528'896 bytes, build date is 29.3.2002, 17:27. The decoder should be exactly the same, in fact, you install the pro version and nobody asks you for any registration and you can start playing divx3/4/5 files right away as usual. Then, in the codec setup I didn't notice any differences either. But where there was a difference is when I started the first encoding session. A window came up saying I had to register the codec to use it, then I could register or cancel (in which case vdub would abort with a -100 error). Upon pressing register I had to enter a 4x5 character/number serial number, then I was able to go on a webpage where I had to enter my personal data upon which I was presented with a 5x4 character/number activation code that I had to enter. That's all I can say so far.. just started the first encoding pass.

So, I would assume that there's a filesize difference in the actual dll, knowing that it has this registration check whereas the ad version dll only checks for a single registry key (mentioned in my divx5 adware summary) and start encoding if it's there.

Thanx so far...let us know, if you find any differences in the output of the ad-/non-ad-dlls...
