Help!!

this is a continuation of this (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19346) thread.

im not sure but i think the registry change doom9 put on the main news page may have corrupted alot of my avi, but not all. i don't know why some were and some weren't.

is there any way to rebuild an corrupted avi? they worked perfectly before, and i didn't change any of them directly.

the only other thing i did was install DixV 5.0, but i dont see how that can be the one causing all this, since the files don't play on other working computers.

can someone out there help me? or else a large part of 160 GB my collection is just wasted space now.

Now...the registry entry that you deleted did not corrupt all your AVI files I assure you. Think logical dude..you think because of one registry entry that was deleted it caused all your AVI's to suddenly go corrupt?

Now be specific and please enlighten us on what you refer to as being corrupt will you? Do they not play at all with any player? Does the audio work? What OS? Which players were used? Details and more details please:devil:

Drastic i know but one sure fire way to solve your problem is to do an over the top re-install or ask doom nicely for that particular reg entry and put it back.

have you tried re-associating avi with wmp.this simple thing may solve your problem.

sorry for the subject....pressed submit too early.

Im running WinXP and using WMP 6.4 for video (don't use the new WMP, neither do i use the Playa but i have it on my computer). When i made the change i made a backup reg rile of the key i was deleting (wouldn't just delete a registry key without a backup).

not all movies were corrupted. there seems to be a corellation with avi's that lost their summary properties and the unability to play. that's why i suggested the the registry change, since it was known that it removes the ability to see file properties.

I just repaired my XP installation using my CD last nite. That still hasn't solved the problem.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what could change an avi like that?


These are some of the errors:

Cannot play back the file. The format is not supported. (WMP 6.4)

Cannot determine filetype of *.avi (Nandub)

Summary properties are unavailible for the selected sources. (File Properties)

This is not an AVI file (DivX Fix 1.06)

*.avi doesn't comply RIFF format (Total AVI tags editor v1.1)

The location your selected could not be opened. (The Playa)

Keep in mind, these were avi's that were working before.

I have to think that you possiblly deleted a registry key by accident. I followed Doom9's procedure to delete the key and I lost the properties page. However, all my Xvid and Divx files still playback with all players.

If you run a disk check does it report any errors? I'd uninstall Divx 5 as well and then reinstall Divx 3 and 4. It's worth a shot just to see what happens.

You said you tried playing the AVI's on other computers and they wouldn't play?

i went to the key doom9 stated. then i exported that particular branch into a .reg file to merge later if something happened. and then something did happen. but what could change the data in a file like that? are avi's arranged kind of like packets, where there are headers that can be separated from the raw data? maybe some program out there can strip the headers and rebuild the file? least i hope so...

... and yes, they no longer play on other computers, nor are there any summary properties, which kinda leads me to believe that the somthing stripped that information from the avi. but why only certain avi's i dont know. does deleting that key cause the summary properties to be disable them from being shown, or could it actually change them within the file?

Well I did the registry hack and the only problem I had was the properties page don't appear on AVI files. That's it. They all play fine.

Me wonders where you downloaded your Divx 5 codec though? What are the chances you downloaded it from somewhere...well lets say...a shady site? What are the chances of a trojan horse or virus being inside the codec that corrupted your AVI's? Are you running any sort of virus protection?

seems i had a trojan virus inside my Winamp3 beta folder. mc.exe contained the Trojan.Picshow virus. there's no information from symantec about it, so i don't know what it was causing . . .

well, until there's more info on this virus i can't guess what caused the file corruptions.

and i DLed the DivX 5 codec straight from doom9, and im not so quick to point fingers at the man =)

Sorry to hear that man. I've used the Divx 5 Pro from Doom9 also so the trojan maybe came with WinAmp 3.

Please keep us up-to-date as to what happens.
