View Full Version : How to tell an AVI's colour depth?

Hi
If I load an AVI into Nandub or Virtual Dub I can find a lot about the video properties (eg. framerate, aspect), but nothing about colour depth.
I presume most AVIs are 24-bit, but if one were say 23-bit, could you see the visible difference? (guess I'm thinking about
15-bit and 16-bit colour pictures, which used to be quite popular at one time).
Is there a program which accurately determines an AVI's colour depth?
thanx

just right click your avi and select properties then the details tab.this will give you all your info including colour depth.there isn't a great difference between them though.

If you use DivX ... and your previous postings indicate so ... be aware that your avi's will be created with 24-bit depth, though the file will show as having 16-bit.
For more info, search on "16-bit 24-bit".

It's mainly for AVIs that I have downloaded rather than one I have created myself.
When I create DivXs in NanDub v1.0rc2, I always leave the colour depth set at 24-bit. Not sure what you mean by "will show as having 16-bit" - just checked the last DivX I made and Properties, Details said "24 Bits" as expected.
For more info, search on "16-bit 24-bit".
Will do

Cool. Wonder why NanDub VDub don't give this info.
