View Full Version : is DivX5 (Pro) really faster than DivX4?

hi,
after two encoding processes, I was not of the opinion that DivX5 is really much faster than 4! and I have choosen "Fast recompress" in VD!
So, is all the stuff with "DivX5 is faster than DivX4" wrong, or (another point) are my settings wrong?

Well, it slower for me. Makes me wonder where is 20% speed increase and AMD optimizations...
Anyway, let's look at FPS (at resolution 640x480, if I'm not mistaken)
Divx 4.12: 25-33
Divx 5, no goodies (B frames, etc): 10-15 (first pass), 15-18(2nd pass, using MV info)
Divx 5+ all goodies except psy. stuff and preprocessing: 5-8 (1st pass), 10-15 (2nd pass)
Update: just encoded 29th chapter of Matrix (R1, forced film), resolution 640x272.
Divx 5+goodies FPS: 15-18(1st pass!) 23-26 (2nd pass).
Now I'm confused. Will try again with someting @25 FPS from R2...
resizing done with avisynth (sharp bicubic resize), frameserver is Dvd2Avi, both encoding same material, of course (Farscape 2x19: Liars, Guns And Money: A Not So Simple Plan, R2, 25 FPS). I did choose Fast Recompress in VirtualDub.
My comp: Athlon XP 1700+, 256 DDR ram, WinXP, disk was defraged before ripping.

If not use PRO version's B frames etc but use mvinfo.bin it is much faster by second pass.
And what you expected ? That new, complexer compression methods will work faster ?

yes :-)

i find he 2nd pass certainly faster (close to real time on my Dell 1.5GHz Pentium 4) compared to 4.12.

Nope, but I did expect that straight Divx without B-frames, etc would be about as fast as Divx 4.12...and they did say 20% percent increase, amd optimizations, yada yada yad...(at least according to http://www.divx.com/divx/divx_win_versions.php). It is possible that I misunderstood it.
Anyway, speed related question: Is it just me or is p3 500 too slow to play divx5 movies (sister's PC)?
