Encode Jumps When Camera Moves

Can someone please tell me why after I create a .avi file then I watch it and when the camera moves like left - right it is all jumpy? Someone please let me know if there are certain settings or something I can change. Also 1 other thing. When my movie shows words the words move up like 1/6 an inch then down like 1/6 an inch and it does that really fast so it just jumps around. If anyone could help me I would very much appreciate it!

Could be caused by your audio settings. Did you use AC3? You have a Soundblaster Live soundcard? The recommended settings dont't work for everyone.

I have the same issue... except the Jumpiness from camera pans also appear on the standalones. So it's definitely in the encode somehow...

What's your source? Usually jerkiness happens when either an improper frame rate or field order is chosen. That's kind of the problem with one-clicker transcoders like Dr. Divx or Divx converter (if that's what you're using): They automatically choose their own settings, and they aren't always right. Also, is your source PAL or NTSC? You could try using AutoGK with the Divx codec simply to rule it out, providing that AutoGK (itself a one-clicker that sometimes "misses" when choosing the right way of dealing with material) makes better decisions.

If you are using Dr. Divx or Divx Converter, try going to the support forums on Divx.com and see if your problem's addressed there. If it isn't, create an account and post it; those guys are usually pretty good at at least paying attention to problems people report, and it'll likely be looked into.

I have solved this problem (for myself at least)...

Whichever audio format you are using, use a CBR. I had read about DivX encodes in an AVI container being all "skittish" and "jumpy" during camera motions if the audio encoding was set to VBR. Sure enough, mine was.

The real "doh!" of this situation was I should have realized it sooner. These were the first few full-length films I've encoded with DivX and StatxRip, and it was also the first time I decided to use VBR instead of CBR. I had encoded many tv series episodes using MP3 CBR with no jumpy issues. That should have tipped me off right there...


At any rate, try it yourself! (I have realized I'm replying to posts from 2002, but I have heard of people STILL trying to figure this out and I didn't want to double-post)

Addendum: I have noticed that if you use VBR but are sure to do a compression check, the problem does not appear... has anyone else tried this?
