A lot of people are complaining about filesize prediction with divx5. So far I encoded 5 movies with divx5 using Gordian Knot as bitrate calculator and Avisynth frontend. My filesizes were within +-1MB exact.

With divx4 I used to get about +0-15MB (pretty bad inho), with divx3 sbc also +-1MB.

Just my 2c.

The main problems predicting filesize seem to occur when you use the Pro options, like bi-directional encoding etc. Are you using these?

I'm using all 3 pro options (QPel, GMC, Bi-dir) but no psycho stuff.

Using or not using pro functions doesn't help, I got all the time 10 to 50 Mb less than calculated

I also got the best results with divx5pro! I always use 700MB CD-Rs and with my first Encoding with Divx5pro (GMC and B-Frames) resulted in 700 MB (with vbr mp3 sound)!

for a 2CD rip, I got the final output about 250 MB below what GNot predicted. I just selected bidirectional encoding. 640 x 272 size. bit rate of 1450. when i changed the bitrate to 1600 for the 2nd pass, the output size did not change by even 1 byte.

this is my 2nd rip in divx5. the 1st rip (Pearl Harbor) came out fine (very close to GNot estimate).

this sounds as if your first movie were very compressable, meaning that it needed no more bits for best possible quality. Do you get a larger file by choosing 1 pass quality 100%?

Also I use higher resolutions even with 1CD encodes (depending on compressability).

I'd just like to point out that using b-frames did not change the filesize for a test I just made. I did "The Fifth Element", to put on 1 CD. The resolution was 672x288, and the target filesize was 526.6 MB (meaning a bitrate of 582 kbps). Both the version with b-frames and the one without came out 530 MB, which is not so bad.

One interesting sidenote about the advantage of b-frames: the average quantizer for the version without b-frames is 6.79, while it is 5.69 with b-frames. So it's a nice boost in quality.

I've encoded The Kiss Of The Dragon.

Desired size: 606Mb
Final size: 557Mb

I'm starting to think than the undersized issue depends of the number of kbs that the codec has to do the job. If it hasn't enough bits the result come close to final size. But when you have enough bit, the result come undersized.

The encoded version with xvid match exactly the size +-50kb and the quality was better but it has 50Mb more than divx5 version(with the new stuff)

They shouldn't be of different sizes, because you tell the codec to maintain a specific bitrate. The codec will calculate the quantizers it needs to fulfill that bitrate. That's why you are seeing a higher quality, but equal filesize with Bidirectional encoding.
The only way to get a difference in filesize is when you use fixed quantizers to encode.
