Hi there!
Is it possible to play DivX 5 Pro encoded material on a machine that has only DivX 5 Basic installed? Is there any quality or feature loss?
Is there a DivX 5 Basic code-only installer out or is there a plan to make one?
I usually burn the Codec onto my CDs so this is somewhat important to me.
Thanks for the help!

I didn't really try that, but in my opinion, after encoding there shall be a more or less ISO-compatible MPEG4 video, no matter if you used the Basic or Pro version. The difference is just that the Pro version allows more advanced features.
The playback instead is done by the DirectShow filter in most currently available video players. There is no reason to disable any features here (because everyone shall be able to watch the quality enhancements!), the playback therefore shall be always full-featured, no matter if the encoder is. (It might be possible that the DivX4 decoder may not be able to play all DivX5 features, though.)
About codec only releases: I know they exist, I've seen them. But it's not that easy to find them. At http://dvd.box.sk you can get the Pro without player. The Basic codec-only may follow soon...

the playback filter is the same in both basic and pro so it can decode all features

Thanks for the help.
I've seen the Pro codec-only installer on the frontpage of this site but for burning my CDs the basic codec-only installer would do - and is hopefully smaller.
In addition, If I want to show the movie at a friend's house, I don't want him/her to have to install the pro version with adds when the basic version would do the job just as well...
I hope there will be a codec only version of the Basic DivX 5 soon.

Mmmh. I guess there's no progress on this subject so far.
I'm somewhat in a dilemma here:
If I burn the DivX 5 Basic Bundle on a CD and take it over to my friend's house, it installs the Playa, which I don't want.
If I burn the DivX 5 Pro codec-only on the CD, it will install the add software, which I don't want either. :(
I think the player is the lesser evil so I guess I'll have to go with the Basic Bundle for now...
I still have hope there will be a Basic codec-only though.

For playback only, it should be enough to copy the divxdec.ax into the system directory and register it with "regsvr32.exe divxdec.ax".
Did you try that?

Cool, thanks.
Now the only thing I would have to do is write a small .bat file that does the copying and registering for me.
What is the format again to copy directly into the system folder? %\\system32\\% or so? Can't remember...

i don't know the correct one for the system32 folder, but you can take %SystemRoot%\system32 ... should word as well...
by the way, is it possible that the movie.exe 1.23 doesn't work with divx 5 anymore? it checks if the codec is installed by looking up
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnInstall\DIVXCodec
but this one doesn't exist anymore with divx 5, only a key named "Divx 5 Pro Bundle" (which I think will differ according to the version you've installed). so it won't be possible to check if divx is installed anymore, at least not with this tool?
is there any other way of checking it?
