View Full Version : What Settings (Bitrate) for 800MB/90min CDRs?

Hi there.

In the past I used 700MB/80min CDRs to Backup my DVDs with DVD2SVCD.
Now I´ve got a new CD-Writer and would like to use 800MB/90min CDRs.
But I´m still confused about the bitrate settings - what settings do I need to get good results on 2 CDs of this type (mostly for movies between 90 and 140 minutes) ?

Before I used Bitrate default-settings with 790MB and VBR at 2. Are there any further settings I have to change for now using 800MB CDRs?

Thanks in advance

Actually for video including the ones made by DVD2SVCD the minutes equal the megabytes for burning. You can burn 806mb no problem on an 80 minute cdr. So considering that if your CDR burner supports the discs you should be able to burn 900+mb on a 90 minute disc and so on. There is a sticky I started in the advanced forum that people are posting what they have successfully burned and played on their player. It seems that the DVD player is the deciding factor. I can play a file up to 928mb on my 90 minute cdr discs on my Apex, but my Pioneer 343 dies on anything larger then 906mb, final bin size.
All you need to do is change the cd size to 900 for 90 minute discs and remember that DVD2SVCD makes a final image about 6mb's larger.

I suggest doing some reading of the other threads on bitrate.
For 140 minute movies even with 90 minute discs you will not get a good encode in my opinion.

If you type in the exact length of the movie you will see what the average bitrate will be for the number of cd's selected. By keeping your average above 1800 you should get a decent encode. Make sure to put the numbers back, as you never want a movie to fall right on a border. The movie may actually be a few minutes longer and then all your calculations will be wrong.
It's not that hard and it is explained in the Q + A. I suggest you read it and the Newbie FAQ.

"For 140 minute movies even with 90 minute discs you will not get a good encode in my opinion"

While not totally disagreeing or agreeing with Mark's statement, my feeling is that these 90 min are very useful in converting SOME movies on TWO disks that you would normally place on THREE disks.
A case in point is my REencode of Terminator 2 ( 137 minutes - 16:9 aspect ratio ) which I had on 3 - 80 min disks at a VBR bitrate of about 2150 with 224 sound. The rencode was on TWO 90 min disks. The 4 pass VBR with 160 sound had a bitrate of about 1620. The encode was very good quality. I played the same chapter over with both encodes. Quality of the 3 disk encode over the 2 - 90 min disk encode was VERY slight - IMHO the 2 disk encode would be perfectly acceptable to most people.
I guess it all boils down to an individual's acceptance level. Some people would NEVER go below 1800 on ANY encode. 1600 bit rate VBR encodes on 16:9 material looks good enough for me - If it was a 4:3 encode I would probably use more bitrate - maybe 1800 minimum ..
