With mp3gain, whether you choose to normalize your wave files before encoding into MP3, you can ensure that your output MP3 gives you the maximum volume and will not clip using mp3gain after the encoding. This process is lossless (no distortion or noise introduced), does not reencode, supported by all players (it's part of the mp3 specs), and completely reversible.
Now it can be part of an all-in-one transcoding package.

Thanks for the nice find tangent. This can provide new possibilities for sure:)

i already implemented one-pass normalization in BeSweet without using any source.

@tangent
i now recall that you're a big fan of the idea of asserting gain after encoding. (u once post about it..)
so, did you try using -ota( -G max) with BeSweet v1.2 ?

More than once, actually :)
I have to admit I have not tried it yet, because I'm only encoding in Ogg Vorbis for sound now. I suppose it uses the same gain methods as mp3gain does? Then it should be great I guess, and I'd definitely recommend this over any other methods of normalising.
Now all we need is something similar for Ogg Vorbis. Replaygain is actually almost standardized in Ogg Vorbis already, in which Garf/GCP has been working on. I haven't followed it's progress yet, but I think the current problem is getting the standard player to recognize it. Unless there is a way to do gain control similarly to mp3gain does. But this may not be necessary because according to Monty, Ogg Vorbis has some sort of inbuilt clipping protection.

calculation of the replaygain ins't a big problem, so whenever there's a standard for ogg's ReplayGain tag, i'll implement it.
