Go to download section and grab these two files:
ASPI checker , ForceAspi 1.7
First one chcecks your aspi (if you have it installed correctly) and the second one installs it...
this should help

Try playing first the DVD in WinDVD or PowerDVD (or any other program you use), stop it after awhile and immediately start DVDx.
This should help

If you want permanent subtitiles you have to use VirtualDub's Subtitiler filter or VobSub (the last one best if used with avisynth).
For detailed information refer to the Subtitiles forum, SVCD Encoding forum and check Doom9's guides. I'll be gone for couple of days, so I will not be able to help you more. But that's just two days.... :)
take care

Hi Aleksander,
I made 4 SVCD's now with DVDx and I just selected the subtitle file in the pull down list with an offset of -20, it gave me in the 4 movies permanent subtitles without the need of another program like you mentioned. Any idea?
(I had to do the offset because the second line of the subtitling was below the picture)

I'm not familiar very much with DVDx (actually never used it :) ) but what you have written sounds like it's doing it job great. I guess it's just like dvd2svcd - you actually don't have to know how and what it is doing - it's just doing it. The things I have described can be used when you want to do your encoding manually - without any progies of DVDx or DVD2SVCD like...
