Hello,
Sorry in advance for this long-winded post. I'm having a strange problem with some MPG video files, I was wondering if someone could help me out. The problem is a bit hard to describe, so I've posted some links to sequential images further down.
Here's my situation. I work for a small television station, and we have a Vela commercial insertion system for playing our on-air spots. The system has a nice real-time MPG2 encoder card, and a CD-RW drive. We are trying to find a way to take the individual commercials on the system and transfer them to DVD for archiving or demo reels. After a little experimenting, we've almost got it to work... almost.
We found it is nescessary to de-mux and re-mux the streams before any DVD burning program will recognize them. The Vela uses an odd system for labeling it's streams in the MPG files. Here is what bbdmux says when you send a Vela MPG through it:
Found PID 0x0000, Program Association Table Stream
Found PID 0x1039, Other Stream
Found PID 0x0010, stream id 0xE0 = Video Stream 0
Found PID 0x0011, stream id 0xC0 = MPEG Audio Stream 0
Found PID 0x1FFF, Null Packet Stream
We have been taking the video and audio streams and re-muxing them to a DVD compliant stream with TMPG. I have no idea what the other 3 streams do, but I assume that they are not important. (I could be wrong, though) Here is the problem we are running into once the video is on DVD.
The video looks fine when you play it, however, problems become obvious if you frame-advance through the video. After a few frames the picture becomes "doubled". One image is black and white, and "ahead" of the other frame time-wise. The second image is like a color ghost of the previous frame. This continues for a few frames, then the frames go back into sync. All the video is like this. It is not really noticeable when the picture is moving, unless the motion becomes very fast. It's most noticeable on cartoons and moving graphics, so I used this as the example. Here are some sample images:

We have tried changing the bitrate and the I-B-P frame structure before capture, but it always comes out like this. We have also tried encoding from different sources (direct from satelite, various VTR's and tapes), but always the same results. I should mention the the files look fine when played in the Vela system itself, but not after the conversion to DVD. I'm guessing we need to change one of the settings in the Vela before capture, or include one of the "other" streams when we re-mux the MPG files. If anyone has any clues, please let me know. I can list some of the caputure options or more stream info if you like. Thanks!
