Divx5 and Divx4

Hi,

Far as I know...DivX 5 installs over DivX 4.xx when you install it.

Only thing I can think of is try re-installing 4.xx again...shoudl be able to keep both on your system

I tried that , but nothing . They have same dll (divx.dll).I tried renaming it and change some values in register and win.ini but nothing. Is there anyone who knows how to do that ?

OK. I found out that it's possible to have both version of divx at same time and thay work , but it needs little register editing.

OK , I'll trie to explain .
For Windows ME (maybe all Win9x , I din't trie that yet)
First install Divx4.12 , goto to windows\system folder and rename divx.dll in divx4.dll. Open system.ini in windows folder and find under drivers32 vidc.DIVX=DivX.dll and change it to vidc.DVX4=DivX4.dll
Now open regedit
Editing register
Under
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32]
creat new value
vidc.dvx4=DivX4.dll
Under
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\MediaResources\icm\]
creat new keywith name vidc.DVX4 , and under that key enter new strings
"Description"="DivX Codec 4.12"
"Driver"="DivX4.dll"
"FriendlyName"="DivX Codec 4.12"
Now you can start VirtualDub and under Compression you'll see Divx 4.12 and when you click on it will show "Divx4.dll" . Now you can install Divx5.
For Windows XP
Install Divx4.12 ,rename divx.dll under windows\system32 in to divx4.dll

And that's it. It worked for me.And one warrning . Divx4 and Divx5 place they settings in same place in register so if you change like bitrate in divx4 it will have same effect on divx5.

Without this I would not have installed Divx5 again, because I need a reliable Divx4.12 to capture from WinTV (divx5 crashes every time when I try to capture in realtime).

Neither DivX3 nor 4 are open source, so no-one will have a -legal- source code lying around.

Nic used the OpenDivX code to produce the XviD DSF, so you should be able to find that one somewhere. Check ProjectMayo or ask Nic directly.

Thanks A LOT ECY for that divx4.inf. It works great and now its never been easier to use divx4 along with divx5 thanks to you. In fact I think doom9 should add it to the downloads section.

I have made a inf file with divx 4.dll and directshow filter of 4 than can be installed with divx5 and that s works (you must use regsever32 anytime when you want to use the directshow filter of 4.12 version)

u cannot use the divx 4 filter to play divx 4 content while having the divx 5 filter play divx 5 content, because divx4 and divx5 video files use the same fourcc code. this means there is no way for the decoder filters to know which is wich. what ends up happening is that the divx4 filter attempts to play divx5 content by accident (it cant tell the difference) and it crashes media player.

anyways ... i packaged the 'modified' divx 4 codec dll into an executable installer (using the nullsoft install system) and called it 'divx 4.12 secondary codec' to differentiate it from the original divx 4.12 codec which would replace the divx 5 codec.

attached is the installer i made, which works on all os's (win9x, me, 2k, xp) and includes an uninstaller (shows up in add/remove programs)

@doom9 - if u find it worth it, please post it on ur software page, as this way people can choose to encode to divx 4 or 5

Yes , you changed FourCC in registry but Divx4 and 5 writtes FourCC in AVI file and it's just divx (not divx4 or something like that) so all your Divx AVI's will be played with same filter.

@ffroms - u are right, they both write the same 'decoder' fourcc (namely "DIVX") but use different 'codec' fourcc which is used not during playback, but during encoding / editing (ie. vdub uses this fourcc). therefore, the most recently registered "DIVX" fourcc playback filter always tries to play divx 4 and 5 avi's in wmp or wherever.

@ECY - u are mistaken. the changes to the registry made in your inf file merely writes a different 'codec' fourcc to the files encoded when this 'variation' of the divx 4 codec. my installer makes those same changes. that way you can have both codecs installed on the same system and they wont try to both encode files with the same fourcc. there is simply not a way to get two different dshow filters to play avi's with the same 'decoder' fourcc (namely "DIVX").

which fourcc codec is changed? That of divx4, or that of divx5 files? If it's the divx4 fourcc that is changed, you'd have to change the fourcc of all your old divx4 files to watch them with the divx4 playback filter. If it's the divx5, you are now encoding divx with a non-standard fourcc which will not play on any other system without changing the fourcc back to standard first.

Is playing back divx4 with the original filter really worth that much trouble?

usually i'd say it's not worth it - not at all !!!
but when i was watching a divx4 encoded movie yesterday i realized that divx5 is dropping some of its frames (i tried it under wmp and the player that comes with divx5). if there are other solutions to prevent frame dropping - every advice is highly appreciated !

I made the registry modifcations outlined by FFROMS to retain my divx4 codec, installed divx5.0 , installed divx5.01 over it asssuming it would upgrade itself properly.

began noticing a dark area about 15-20p wide down the right of my
movie.

reinstalled 5.0 to uninstall it.
reinstalled 5.01 to uninstall it

now currently have only divx4.dll as renamed in that procedure
and my divx4 movie looks clean.

reinstalled divx5.01 and the problem returns both in my divx4 movie and my divx5 movie.

I believe that's a 'normal' bug of DivX5.01 when playing back DivX4 or DivX5.0 encoded movies. A few more users have reported the same thing.

Ok i try my inf files for direct show filter for divx4
and it works
Test was to delete divdec.ax (divx5 version) and play a
divx4 file and it works.
so both encoder writes the same fourcc but use other fourcc to decode

I didnt have to tweak registry at all. I uninstalled divx 3.11 before installign divx 5.0.2. Now i can use either divx5 divx4 low motion or divx4 Fast motion

Before installing divx5 I was using both divx 3.11 and divx4
