DivX 5 decoder seems slower with XviD HDTV clip

I recently made a short 15 second 1280x720p sample HDTV clip using XviD at about 4.5 mbps. Using Zoom Player and the Divx4 decoder I could play it very nicely at more or less full speed, 23+ FPS, at least scaled in my 960x544 RPTV HD display. This is with a 866 P3 PC133 and a Matrox G400 card.

But with the Divx5 decoder I get maybe only 16-21 FPS.

I've turned off post processing but am not willing to run in 16 bit color since you can't compare things like web screen shots properly.

Grrrr ...

Any ideas? If I back it off then I probably can't display new stuff with b-frames.

I think I recall you mentioning that you tried encoding it in divx 4.12 as well. How does divx 5.0 handle playback of the 4.12 encoded movie? What happens if you encode it in divx 5.0?

4.12 used to play fine at 720p on this box. Guess I'll check to see how it does now.

My only HDTV encoding test on DivX 5 so far I reduced to 2.5 mbps at only 928x528. Of course that plays fine, but probably won't if I go back to 4.12 since I used b-frames.

The DVN web site suggests dropping back to 16 bit color for speed but on my G400 card it is much faster at 32. Go figure.
