Hello you DivX addicted friends who I am sure that you have not been sleeping since the release of the codec!
I encoded my PAL Fight Club DVD with DivX 5.0 using:
SmartRipper
DVD2Avi
Gordian Knot
AviSynth
VirtualDub
# I have not cropped and resized into the codec. I did that in GKnot.
# I have used the exact same bitrate as in DivX 4.0
# I have not used deinterlace or IVTC as the source was PAL.
# I HAVE used QuarterPixel, GMC, Bidirectional Encoding
# We are talking about 2 passes of course.
# I have not used Psychovisual Enhancements and Pre Processing as the first one is still buggy and I did not have a noisy source.
What did I get?
# The BEST quality ever seen in DivX. I have used XVid, DivX 3.11 SBC, DivX 4.0 and FairUse. NOTHING AS GOOD AS DivX 5.0 so far using 2 CDS and AC3 sound @ 384 kbps (same movie always).
# No artifacts. AT ALL.
# The avi file (with AC3) produced can be played in every player and the quality does not change if I use the DivX Player Alpha 2.0.
@ If you try to convert the file from AVI to MP4 after multiplexing the AC3 it will not be done and you will get an error message.
@ If you convert just the AVI without sound you will get a file with same quality, 2 MB smaller. (I do not see the point doing this)
@ If you try producing the MP4 file from the encoding in VirtualDub you will get a crash. So DO NOT. First make the AVI file and then convert to MP4 (the convertion took 2 minutes for a 1 GB file).
This is it. Rate the codec. Do your test and PLEASE make a DivX 5.0 Calculator!
PS: One more thing noticed is that while I search through the movie (you know, moving the slider) I get to the wanted part immediately. No image skip, nothing. Is like navigating in a 3 MB AVI file.
I hope I helped you out there!
