Gknot "bitrate" has me confused

This is my first attempt at divx (i tried xmpeg first but got that error)

I`m attempting to encode a 170min PAL dvd into a 1400mb avi (2 cdrs).

I`ve been following the guide, but i`ve come across two niggles.

1. DVD2AVI project file. There is 8 vobs 1,2,3 are 1gb each 4 is 300mb, 5,6,7 are 1 gig and 8 is 300mb. I watched dvd2avi make the project file and it decided to finish at 1hr 25mins. Does this mean its only done vobs 1 thru 4 for the project? If so how do i sort this little problem out?

2. When I come to cropping it don`t appear to do anything. The box with the movie playing in it just shows the movie without black bars anyway. Does it even need cropping because its pal?

3. Following the guide to the letter in this way i`m getting a bitrate of 0.187. It should be around 0.27 for 2 cd`s why isn`t it? Is it because dvd2avi has only done half the project?

I`m completely clueless. Someone lend me a hand please to where i`m going wrong. :)

I don't have any experience with this problem but i'll try to help u anyway. What movie is it?

1. 1hr and 25 is exaclty one half of 170min, i don't think this is an coinsidence. Check what Smartripper says about the duration. When it also says 1hr and 25mins, you left some vobs on the DVD disc. Search where the other 85 minutes are. Probably they're in another chain or something.
Then check with PowerDVD (or whatever DVD software you use) whether you got the right vobs.

2. Check view -> resized in the window where you can see the movie.

3. 0.187 seems a fair number for a 170 minute movie on 2 CDs. You do realize that 170 minutes is twice as much as the average movie, don't you?

1.What kind of movie is it? From what you say about the vob files, it looks like it's stored as two seperate movies on the DVD, so it would be no wonder DVD2avi only processed the first one.
If it is only one movie, try to add the missing files manually when opening them in DVD2AVI.

2.Cropping only means you're getting rid of the black bars. That is good for PAL as well as for NTSC because you just don't need to encode that part of the picture - it's only black and therefore a waste of space.

3. The number 0.187 is not the bitrate, it's the bits per pixel value. You can increase this if you increase the bitrate and/or lower the resolution. After you've done a compressibility check, it doesn't matter anyways. All that counts then is how many percent you got (should be above 50%, best between 60% and 75%).

However, a bits per pixel value of 0.187 is indeed a little low and chances are high that your compressibility check will be below 50%
