This as you can guess has to do with the new divx 5 codec. If people want to charge for a codec they own all legal rights to then fair enough. I mean there's even a free adware version for cheapskate and theres still whiners.

Secondly, can the MS bashing subside a little? Anyone whos programmed even a simple calculator knows the amount of things that can go wrong when you add user input to the equation. The reason windows 85, 98 etc. were more unstable than DOS was becasue there are more ways to f**k up in a GUI environment. DOS was pretty linear. NT was more stable beacuse it simply refused to support half the apps written for windows. The same goes for LINUX. Any OS works great with nothing running on it.

Thats my rant for today. I'm off to do some divx 5 testing. :)

I fail to see your logic. Paying for something because it is good and choosing not to because it contains spyware are two different things altogether.

I won`t ever entertain divx5 on my system whilst GATOR is a component of it. Its one of the worse (if not the worse) bits of spyware ever.

The fact divxnetworks decided to go this route is shocking, as it puts them in the same boat as the realplayer folks. Wise people don`t bother with realplayer because of its spyware, likewise wise people won`t bother with divx5 either.

Theres no point using the cut down version if theres a better version and who`s going to pay for a piece of software thats full of spyware anyway?

For everyone out there who don`t mind gator relaying back every webpage you visit and your browsing habits back to gators server, and those of you who enjoy recieving 100`s of spam emails for Viagra or "hot sex" install divx5 and see what your missing.

I`m certainly not going to be.

Buggerlugs,
I think you got something wrong here: Only the FREE Pro Version of DivX5 contains spyware.
The commercial version does not - but it costs 30$

The free version is rather fair, because you can install it and immediately run addaware...

vorbis,
I agree with you on the windows/linux subject. The more Linux is developed to be a competitor for windows, the more problems appear - just like in Windows. From a serious Linux developer I heard that the caching strategy needed to reprogrammed, but everybody's more interested in fancy KDE features, so nobody does it...
As far as I can remember he said he coded an alternative cache routine (d-cache), but most developers do not use it or use it in a wrong way, so it's already become unnecessary waste before it has ever been used correctly.

Please do not nail me down on this, I'm not a Linux developer, I have only marginal knowledge of Linux, I only had a little introductory course in OS-strategies using Linux as an example.

unless you get a bag of chicken fingers from walmart, and eat them while you shop so you have nothing to pay for when you leave. they should be free anyway, i give the biggest company in the world enough money already.

Hi,

[ vorbis ] ... can the MS bashing subside a little? Anyone whos programmed even a simple calculator knows the amount of things that can go wrong when you add user input to the equation.

... agreed - expectations of bug free software are ridiculous when proggies are compiled from 30 mill+ lines of code [ windows ], m$ would never release anything if it was bug-free ... ( maybe that would be a good thing, lol, maybe not ... )

[ buggerlugs ] I won`t ever entertain divx5 on my system whilst GATOR is a component of it. Its one of the worse (if not the worse) bits of spyware ever ...
Wise people don`t bother with realplayer because of its spyware, likewise wise people won`t bother with divx5 either ...

... well, you can always disable the ads ( blech :( ) from what i just read, then adaware as previously posted ... ill bother with divx 5 if it's better than my current codec from my pov i think :) ... also what's wrong with real player ? ... nah, just kidding, hehe.

There's no such thing as a free lunch.

Had me one today actually and got very drunk as well today and didn't pay a red pesoe :).

fair enough comments there.
about spyware though. I don't really place a value on that info. You can always give Gator a fake email address.
Would you prefer to pay for the pro version?
