Give divx 5 some time

The codec is barely out a day and already some people are saying its useless. Look at the amount of tinkering that had gone on with divx 3 and 4 to make them worthwhile. Initial impressions look promising especially with B frames. I'd say a month from now, divx 5 will be the be the highest quality codec for encoding.

A month from now XviD will (hopefully) also have B-frames, and be optimized even further.
DivX5 will never have a development as fast as XviD nor with such a wide implementation of user input.

But only time can tell.

a lot of people here still use divx 3. So much for codec optimization. Xvid, while a great code, needs a settled version before it can truly be evaluated. Its still under heavy development.

As of now, DivX5 is the "best" codec to encode with. Please note that by "best", I mean technically so, and speaking as a coder. It simply produces smaller files than any other MPEG4 codec at the moment (per fixed quantizer), and that is empirically all you can judge an MPEG4 codec by.

However I strongly advise against using the quarter-pel motion search option, it slows encoding and decoding significantly, and actually increases file sizes in many cases. Do some constant-quantizer tests and see :)

hmm...I think you are right, because you are a great coder and you know what you are talking about, but do you remember windows media 8 (this veeery old codec ;) ) ... It also offers very very small file sizes, but who wants that ? I think everybody in this forum is interested in great visual quality and not in having the smallest file sizes !! because of that I like xvid, because you can judge by yourself how much quality your movie shall have (maybe this would need a bit more space) unlike divx4+5 where the movie is small, but also too smooth...

well, use 2/5 and get,presumibily, better quality and same size...

Hey I'm one of the DivX guys. Yes one of the adware guys :). I must say doom9's forums are much more intelligent than the crap going on in our own forums at DivX.com. Anyways, I'll try to stop lurking and help out now that we need to take these new features and make them work correctly. Your are definitely RIGHT, and it is a breath of fresh air, on your approach to testing the potention of DivX Pro. Keeping the Quanizer fixed is the way to do it. Now once you add in the VBR it's just not as good. So obviously there is a problem here. So were back to the drawing board and building the right tools to build very specific Rate Control algorithms for each feature to try to reach the same capabilities you are seeing with the fixed quantizer.

In regards to Quarter Pel, try quartering the size of the video. Supposedly QPel really only shows benefits once you 1/4 the size of the video. So if you want to 1/4 a 720x480 flick (360x240), you'll probably see a much better result with Qpel. The next trick is for our team to really figure out how to make all the features work very well. This is just a new foundation to start from. And yes it is buggy as hell. Fixing now and we'll get all these features working together the way they should!

codec looks promising so far. doing a rip of Mall Rats at the moment.
one thing Darius, why isn't there an option to continue using the divx 3 decoding filter. A small point, but it is slightly irrirating for people who prefer the old codec.

If this is truly in demand and useful, than I'll find a way to give doom9 a special "codec only" installer with this back in there. Have you noticed any 3.11 errors using DivX4/5? If there are than this would make sense for all. In either case I can make this possible. Just let me figure out how to sneak out a new codec only installer :)

Maybe you're right, but i don't think so. divx5 has some cool features (like b-frames) and some will be improved in the near future (like psy), but the codec stays closed, and that means no one exept of the developers can code tools like nandub which will improve the results of the encoded material.

On course, xvid has also problems, but when they move on (working b-frames and things like that) it will get hard to beat this. Maybe not in one month, but more likely in two.

That would be great!! I've had some problems playing 3.11 movies with the new codec. (video plays too fast, or is out of sync) It also seems to take much more ressources than the 3.11 codec does...
